SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah football team finished its first week of on-field workouts during spring practice on Saturday morning at Rice-Eccles Stadium. UtahUtes.com will provide a behind-the-scenes look during the Utes' spring practices.
Practice Summary ...
• Utah was in helmets, jerseys and shorts (no shoulder pads) for the first time during spring practice. Touching a ball carrier was enough to bring them during the workout.
• The Utes executed 1-on-1 punt coverage drills, while field goal attempts were take on the south end of the stadium.
• A 7-on-7 drill from a spacer on the defense's 45-yard line was next up in the north side, while 1-on-1 matchups for the linemen were held at the south end.
• After more field goal attempts from varying distances, a full-team scrimmage from the offense's own 40-yard line was held during the final periods of the workout.
From Coach Whittingham ...
• Wanted to move in as many guys into the lineup as possible during the workout.
• Too early to make a definitive statement on position battles.
• Marcel Manalo has stepped up his game along with Troy McCormick. Manalo will be a good addition to the lineup.
• Wide Receiver Caleb Repp has made very good progress during the offseason along with the whole receiving corps.
• Twenty-percent of the way through spring practice (three of 15 total) and today was the first one in full pads for spring practice.
• There will be a good battle for safety opposite Marcus Williams.
• The wide receiving corps has had a great work ethic with concentration and have been perfectionists under new coach Guy Holliday.
Post-Practice Impressions from the Utes ...
Defensive Coordinator Morgan Scalley
• Pita Taumoepenu is 10 pounds heavier. He has put on weight during the offseason and will continue to be an elite pass rusher.
• Taumoepenu has done his part during the offseason.
• The quarterback competition looks to be a fun one.
• With Kyle Fulks and Cory Butler-Byrd as slot receivers is difficult for anyone to cover.
Wide Receiver Caleb Repp
• Has made very good progress during the offseason along with the whole receiving corps.
Spring Ball Extras ...
• Customary musical tracks blared from speakers at midfield, including tracks by AC/DC and David Lee Roth.

• The next practice for the Utes is Tuesday afternoon from 3 to 4:45 p.m. MT.
