SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah football team began its second week of on-field workouts during spring practice on Tuesday afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium. UtahUtes.com will provide a behind-the-scenes look during the Utes' spring practices that are open to the public.
Practice Summary ...
? Utah was in full pads for the second time during spring practice on a cloudy afternoon at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
? The workout featured full-team live work from the offense's own 40-yard line.
? After two series, the Utes broke into two groups with the offensive and defensive linemen moving to the south end for 1-on-1 battles from the 5-yard line heading into the end zone, while all other players participated in a 7-on-7 drill from midfield facing north.
? Boobie Hobbs made an interception on the final rep of 7-on-7.
? Full-team work resumed in the next period of practice as the offense took over in a 4-minute situation from its own 36-yard line with the first and second-teamers alternating possessions.
? The situations then moved to 'drive it' mode with five minutes put on the game clock with the offense taking over at its own 40-yard line. The first and second teams switched on and off for three series.
? Caleb Repp picked up a long gain during a catch down the west sideline that put the offense in a goal-line situation.
? On the final possession of the practice, Justin Thomas and Marcus Williams teamed up for an impressive downfield pass breakup.
From Coach Whittingham ...
? We have a good defensive front, I've been saying that for a while now and I'll keep saying it. Those guys get after it.
? After watching the film of the first week of spring camp, we have a chance to be good.
? Defensively, the big question is the linebacking corps, but Cody Barton and Sunia Tauteoli are stepping up.
? Offensively, we like the progression of the quarterbacks and the receivers are working hard.
? Kenric Young worked exceptionally hard in the offseason. He knows his stuff, he's assignment sound. He has speed, size and is a tenacious blocker. That's probably the thing he does best right now. Blocking downfield is a huge component in the run game.
? The keys for Utah's quarterbacks will be ...
- Taking care of the ball.
- Moving the chains.
- Having a high completion percentage.
- Maintaining a high touchdown-to-interception ratio.
Post-Practice Impressions from the Utes ...
Running Back Joe Williams
? We got after it today. Everyone in the running back unit helps each other.
? Williams and Troy McCormick live in the same apartment complex so they frequently talk off the field.
Offensive Guard Isaac Asiata
? I'm very confident in our offensive line unit. We had a great offseason.
Linebacker Cody Barton
? Has always gotten along well with his older brother and Utah offensive tackle, Jackson Barton.
Spring Ball Extras ...
? Progress continued on the south endzone scoreboard.
Back at It ...
? The next practice for the Utes that is open to the public will Friday afternoon from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. MT.
