DENVER - The No. 68 Utah men's tennis team was defeated this afternoon at the Stapleton Tennis Pavilion by No. 48 Denver, 5-2.
Utah looked like it would grab the doubles point after taking the first match at the No. 1 position. Dan Little and Matt Cowley defeated David Fox and Alex Gasson, 7-5.However, the Utes dropped the other two matches, 7-6 and fell behind the Pioneers, 1-0.
The Pioneers went ahead 3-0 as they won at No. 1 and No. 2 in singles action. Cowley fell to Henry Craig, 6-2, 6-1 while David Micevski was beaten, 6-3, 6-1 by Diogo Rocha. Utah got on the board when Freddie McGeehan won at the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-4 over Jesse Ruder-Hook but the feeling was short-lived as Egbert Weverink was knocked off at the No. 5 spot by Yannik James, 6-4, 6-3, to seal the match for UD.
"Congrats to Denver for playing a solid match today." said head coach Roeland Brateanu "They are a tough team, but I definitely felt we missed some opportunities to get the win."
The Utes are back in action tomorrow at 1 p.m. MT against No. 59 Penn.
