Practice Summary ...
• Utah was in full pads for its first session of on-field work of the week on a picture-perfect spring evening at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
• Position group work was the first order of the day as each unit spread throughout the field to focus on individual techniques.
• Next up, the offensive and defensive linemen headed to the south end where they split up to hone their skills, while all other players headed to the north end to break down responsibilities for plays involving running backs receiving out of the backfield.
• After another segment of position work, punt coverage drills were the focal point.
• Live work was featured next with live work starting from the offense's own 40-yard line. Senior cornerback Reginald Porter came up with an interception and sophomore tight end Wallace Gonzalez caught a 25-yard touchdown down the seam.
• Seven-on-seven work from the red zone in the south end zone was highlighted next as the linemen headed to the north end to run through their reads and assignments.
• Full-team red zone situations in the north end zone were next up as the first and second units rotated series. • 'Drive it' mode finished off practice as the offense took over at its own 40.
• Joe Williams spun off after making a reception out of the backfield.
• Wide receiver Caleb Repp made a pair of outstanding catches on the afternoon.
• Phillip Afia turned in an interception.
From Coach Whittingham ...
• Saturday's scrimmage is the most important of the spring. It is the culmination of four weeks of work. We just hope we're further ahead than in the previous live work session. It's important to have a gauge of what we've been able to accomplish.
• Saturday's scrimmage will be a similar format to last week's.
• Looking at linebackers, wide receivers and quarterbacks will be among the position battles.
• Tyrone Smith, Cory Butler-Byrd and Raelon Singleton were the wideout standouts during spring practice. Kyle Fulks is also doing a nice job and Caleb Repp has improved.
• Wide receiver Tim Patrick ran with the offense and will be held out of contact. He is a tough matchup for a defense who can stretch the field as a vertical threat.
• Troy McCormick is neck-and-neck with Joe Williams for the No. 1 slot on the depth chart at running back. Both are doing a nice job this spring, but another body or two has to be added to the rotation for the fall.
Post-Practice Impressions from the Utes ...
Linebacker Cody Barton
• There has been a lot of competition and hard work this spring.
• Favorite thing about Linebackers coach Justin Ena is his intensity.
• Favorite member of the offense to go against is his brother and offensive lineman Jackson Barton. Being on the same team is a cool experience.
• Utah's linebacking corps works hard and that's what is expected out of everyone in the program.
