SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Softball ran its winning streak to seven games by earning a apir of victories over Stanford this evening, 13-0 and 8-6. The Utes are now 29-13 on the season, 10-4 in Pac-12 play.
Hannah Flippen paced the Utes with five hits in six at-bats, scoring three times and driving in two. Anissa Urtez had four hits and led the team with four runs scored and seven driven in. Kay Kay Fronda, the reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week, was a homer short of the cycle in the second game.
Utah 13, Stanford 0 (5 inn.)
Utah got offensive contributions from almost everyone in their lineup during a dismantling of the Cardinal. Anissa Urtez had three hits, including her second homer of the season, scored three times and drove in four. Her infield mate Hannah Flippen tallied three hits and scored three times.
Ally Dickman had a pair of hits, including a two-run double, and fellow freshman Maddie Roth also notched a two-bagger that plated a pair. Bridget Castro had a pair of hits, including a double, and two runs scored.
Utah dominated the first game against the Cardinal as the third batter of the game, Urtez smacked a homer for a 2-0 lead
With a runner on base and two outs in the second, Utah's next five batters reached as the Utes extended the lead to 7-0. Flippen smacked a RBI single, Stanford committed an error that led to a pair of runs crossing the plate and Dickman crushed a two-run double to straightaway center field.
To start the third, Castro doubled to the left-center gap. After a single by Kay Kay Fronda and a walk to Flippen, the junior first baseman scored on an illegal pitch. Urtez followed with a two-run single to get the Utes to double digits. After Bowen singled, Roth delivered her big hit and then it was Bella Secaira knocking one in with a single.
Katie Donovan allowed just two hits over three innings and Hailey Hilburn retired the final six batters in order.
Utah 8, Stanford 6
Utah built a big lead and then held off the Cardinal late to take the second game in their Pac-12 doubleheader. Kay Kay Fronda was a homer short of the cycle and scored twice while Kristen Stewart broke the game open with a three-run double.
For the second-straight game, Hannah Flippen and Anissa Urtez also terrorized the Cardinal. Flippen added a pair of hits to her resume and Urtez drove in a pair.
After a scoreless first two innings, Utah blew up in the third. The first five batters reached as Urtez put the Utes up 2-0 with a double down the left-field line. One batter later, it was Stewart smashing one to center that cleared the bases.
For the second game in a row, Bella Secaira delivered a pinch-hit, run-scoring single and Fronda brought the Ute catcher home with a RBI triple to make it 7-0.
Stanford got a pair back in the fourth on a Haley Snyder double and Arden Pettit single and after Flippen added a RBI single in the sixth, Stanford made things interesting in the seventh.
With two outs and a runner on, a walk was followed by a Jessica Plaza single. Lauren Wegner then crushed a three-run homer to get the Cardinal back in the game at 8-6. However, the next batter struck out and the Utes celebrated the victory.
Miranda Viramontes allowed a pair of runs over five innings to improve to 8-4 on the season. Hailey Hilburn pitched the final two innings for the Utes making her Pac-12 leading 16th relief appearance.
The Utes and Cardinal are slated to play their finale at 5 p.m. tomorrow. If the game is postponed until Sunday, the contest will start at 11:30 a.m.
