SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team announced the addition of Russian standout Svyatoslav Shainyan.
Born and raised in Moscow, 'Slava' was a runner up at the Russian National Junior Championships in singles play and the national champion in doubles.
"I feel proud to be a Ute," Shainyan said. "I'm excited to join other the other student-athletes and defend the great name of the University of Utah."
Shainyan has been placed among the top four in the junior national rankings and rated as high as No. 482 in the ITF World Junior Rankings. In 2015, he was a member of Team Moscow and won the Sports Festival, clinching the championship for his team.
"We are very excited about Slava's commitment," Utah head coach Roeland Brateanu said. "He is a very athletic player and hard worker who is going to make a great impact on our lineup."
After his success in Russia, Shainyan trained and played in the United States at the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, California. During his time in the U.S., he ranked as high as No. 48 in the nation and defeated former Ute and current UNLV No. 1 singles player Ace Matias.
"When training in Southern California, I've always wanted to be part of the Pac-12 Conference," Shainyan added. "After visiting the University of Utah and meeting the coaches, I had no doubt to where I wanted to go."
