TEMPE, Ariz. - Utah men's tennis student-athlete Matt Cowley has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Region's Most Improved Player. The honor is annually bestowed to a senior that has made the biggest improvements over the course of his career.
"I just want to thanks the coaching staff, our High Performance team and everyone else who helped me improve throughout my career," Cowley said. "I'm proud to be a Ute."
Cowley joined the Utes in the fall of 2010 as a four-star recruit. During his freshman year, he accumulated a 10-18 record from the No. 5 singles position. After a two-year LDS mission, Cowley returned to the "U" for his sophomore year in which he played predominantly at No. 6 singles.
During his junior year he earned a 12-19 record from the middle of the line up, but was an astounding 24-16 record from the No. 1 singles position during his senior year. He earned victories over Naoki Takeda (Arizona), Charles Boyce (LMU), Toby Mitchell (Boise St.), Hayden Sabatka (New Mexico) and Daniel Santos (Tulsa)
In doubles play, he has been nationally ranked with three different partners and is currently ranked No. 75 in the country with freshman Dan Little.
"Matt is the rightful recipient of this award," Utah head coach Roeland Brateanu said. "He developed better than anyone in the country, which allowed him to be a winner at the top spot for us in both singles and doubles."
Cowley is the second Ute recipient of this award in the past few years. Ben Tasevac claimed this same honor in 2014.Â
