Day 12 Overview ...
• Red zone situations of 11-on-11 live work was the emphasis of today's morning session.
• The field goal unit also received quality reps toward the end of workout.
• The team got in some extra conditioning after practice.
• Today was the fourth of five two-a-days held during preseason camp.
Media Observation Highlights ...
• Tyrone Smith ran a precise 20-yard flag route to the west corner of the south end zone for the offense's first touchdown of the media observation segment. • Kyle Fulks and Caleb Repp also caught touchdown passes.
From Coach Whittingham ...
On today's practice: "It was a little bit of both [the offense playing well and the defense not playing as well]. The defense wasn't quite as sharp today, particularly the 2s. We're not where we need to be right now. We have a little bit of ground to make up with the 2s. We've had better execution lately, not perfect, but better."
On Tyler Huntley: "The thing we have to impress upon him is that there are some plays where there isn't a play to be made and you just have to run the football, throw it away or whatever you have to do. You can't try to force a play every single snap so that's really the thing he's learning. He's getting better at it, but it still shows up once in a while. The flip side of that is he makes a bunch of plays with his athleticism."
On the running back depth chart: "The running backs are starting to sort themselves out with Joe [Williams] and Troy [McCormick] as No. 1 and 2, respectively. Zach Moss and Armand Shyne are battling for No. 3. Whoever can help us win plays and if you're not ready to help us win then you don't play. Those decisions will really be discussed this coming Monday (Aug. 22) when we're 10 days out from the game, trying to determine who we think fits into that category. But for right now, no one's in that mindset. Everyone is competing and trying to win a job. Once we get into school starting and we're 10 days out, then we'll start talking about who it may be in the best interest to redshirt."
On the upcoming Southern Utah game: "Any opener has our complete attention, whether it's Southern Utah or Michigan. We approach it the same way. They're very good, just watch their game against Utah State last year. That will show you how good they are. They're an excellent football team."
On Jackson and Cody Barton: "It's great to have them on our team. They both have phenomenal work ethics. They're conscientious about everything they do. They're two very different body types. Jackson is a big and tall offensive lineman and Cody is more compact linebacker, although he's 6-2. They're both cut from the same cloth and mold as far as how they approach the game. They're very different personalities. Jackson is a little more reserved. Cody is a little more flamboyant and outspoken. They way they operate on the field is very similar, work ethic wise."
Post-Practice Impressions from the Utah Assistant Coaches and Players ...
Co-Special Teams Coordinator and Cornerbacks Coach Sharrieff Shah
On preparation for the season: "We have to find out who will be our No. 2s. That's what needs to be done. Right now, we don't know who's going to be the next group of kids up."
On the offense season: "They're so much better. I suppose it's just the experience. They've been in Pac-12 games now. They know what it feels like to be covered by really good defensive backs and the ranges of good safeties. They're better and more confident. The tweaks we've made in our offensive passing scheme have been awesome. Guy Holliday has brought such a different level of coaching. When you've coached for more than 20 years and put more than 20 guys in the NFL, you have a good formula. You know what you're doing. A seasoned coach is special. A seasoned coach gets something out of every single kid. What he's been able to do has been pretty special, to this point. It's all awesome until you play Sept. 1 and then we'll see but I like where we are at this point, compared to where we were last year."
Linebacker Cody Barton
On competition among linebackers: "We all came in as equals and in fall camp it's all about the battles. We're all working hard and competing. In the end, the guys who can be trusted the most will be playing."
On replacing the departed senior class: "Jared [Norris], Gionni Paul and Jason Whittingham had been here for a while and left some big shoes to fill, but it's not going to be a problem."
On offseason improvements: "I just learned the defense more. I wanted to be one of the smartest players on the field, learning my assignment and everyone else's assignments."
On the defensive line: "With those guys up front, it makes our job a lot easier. They hold up the offensive line and take up double teams."
On chemistry with Sunia Tauteoli: "Last season, we played together in the fall and we played the entire spring together. It's all coming together and it works out great."
On being blocked by his brother, Jackson: "I take him on at least once a series. Some plays or during a series, I won't even know it's him then I'll look back at the film and realize it's him and say to myself, 'Oh, that was Jackson.'"
