SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Soccer opened the 2016 season with a 4-0 thumping of regional rival Weber State on Friday evening at Ute Field. Three different players scored for the Utes and seven collected points in the first game of the new campaign.
"It was a good start to the season," head coach
Rich Manning said. "We obviously had some positives but we also saw some things we needed to work on before Sunday. I'm proud of the way we competed and converted our chances tonight in front of goal."
Utah found itself in front after just 21 seconds when the Weber State goalkeeper played the ball directly to
Natalie Vukic. The junior crossed the ball into the penalty area and a Weber State defender nicked it past her own netminder for a 1-0 lead.Â
In the 26th minute, the Utes doubled their advantage.
Aleea Gwerder found Vukic racing up the near sideline and played her the ball. Just like on the first goal, Vukic crossed into the penalty area and this time,
Eden Jacobsen headed home at the far post for a 2-0 edge. For Jacobsen, it was the first goal of her collegiate career.
After the intermission, Utah maintained possession and kept the Wildcats at bay, controlling the tempo. In the 77th minute,
Max Flom crossed from the far side of the pitch and freshman
Holly Daugirda struck it with her head for a 3-0 cushion. Playing in her first game, Daugirda was excited to get on the score sheet.
"I was just really happy to make a play," Daugirda said. "Max gave me a great ball and I was able to get to it and put it past their goalkeeper. I don't think we could have asked for a better start tonight."
Two minutes later, Utah capped the scoring thanks to a thunderous drive from sophomore
Hailey Skolmoski. She received a pass from
Cabria Turang and rocketed home her second career tally.
Sophomore
July Mathias earned her first career win for the Utes and freshman
Carly Nelson maintained the shutout over the final 13 minutes.
Utah improved to 11-3 all-time vs. Weber State having won five in a row and 10 of 11 against the Wildcats. The Utes have now won six of the eight meetings on their home pitch, out-scoring their foes in the wins, 21-0.
Utah is back in action on Sunday at Minnesota. The Utes and Golden Gophers kick off at 1 p.m. CT
