Utes finish non-conference with five shutouts
SALT LAKE CITY - Utah Soccer (5-2-1) received a second-half goal from Hailey Skolmoski and the defense stood firm in a 1-0 triumph over UC Irvine (8-2-0) this afternoon.  Â
For Skolmoski, it was her sixth goal of the season and third game-winner. That's the highest total of match deciders for a Ute since Kelly Islieb scored four in 2008.
"It was a fantastic result," head coach Rich Manning said. "Our team played with grit and a great team spirit today. Â We bounced back from a tough game on Friday night and played at a high level."
Tavia Leachman picked up the assist on the goal with a beautiful flick-on and the freshman defender was key to her team recording a second-consecutive shutout and fifth overall. Carly Nelson starred in goal and picked up her second clean sheet of the season.
"UC Irvine is an excellent team and pushed us to be at our best.," Manning added. "We showed improvement defensively this weekend. Â I also loved the way we solved problems offensively and gained momentum as the game progressed."
Utah had a pair of chances within the first 10 minutes when Skolmoski headed wide and Taylor Slattery had a try blocked off a corner kick.
Nelson saw her first action in the 33rd minute when she stoned a point blank attempt from Kelsey Texeira and the freshman was also quick to close down Kiana Palacios in the 36th minute.
The Utes two best tries in the final 15 minutes occurred when Max Flom forced a save from Maddie Newsom and Mikayla Elmer fired wide.
UCI started the second half brightly with Alex Karlowitsch testing Nelson in the first minute. However, Utah settled and got the Skolmoski goal to take the lead.
After the goal, the Anteaters pushed for an equalizer with Nelson stopping Palacios and Shelby Lee
Utah looked comfortable down the stretch, creating two good scoring opportunities off corners as Katie Rogers headed high and Leachman pushed one wide.
The best chance to double the score came in the final three minutes when Natalie Vukic and Skolmoski were both denied by Newsom
Pac-12 play begins Friday evening with a contest at Washington.
