Senior scores fifth game-winner of career
SEATTLE – Taylor Slattery scored late in regulation and Utah Soccer won its Pac-12 opener this evening at Washington, 1-0.Utah had a corner kick in the 72nd minute and a foul occurred in the box, giving the Utes a penalty kick. Slattery calmly stepped up and deposited the eventual winner. It was the seventh goal of her career, first of the 2016 season, and fifth game-winner. Â
"We got some fantastic performances," head coach Rich Manning said. "Taylor stepped up in the clutch and put away the penalty kick. Katie Rogers was fantastic all night in the midfield. It was great to see our veteran players show up this way in a big game. We continue to be resilient and find ways to come through. I'm looking forward to seeing how we can take these lessons and apply them next week in Arizona."
This was the first win in a conference opener since 2011 for the Utes and also the first victory in Seattle since 1998. Utah had not scored in its last three meetings against the Huskies but came out with a confidence-building conquest.
"Our team battled, showed a great mindset all night and we were rewarded with a fantastic road win to open up conference play," Manning added. "I loved the way our team worked together and brought a positive energy to the game. Washington tested us with some great movement and dynamic play up front and we were up to the task."
Washington peppered Utah's defense but goalkeeper Carly Nelson kept the Huskies off the board. She stopped Shannon Simon in the 20th minute and denied Ava Lewis in the 32nd. Utah's defenders maintained their solid standing by getting a block in on a Lewis attempt in the 41st minute to keep the match scoreless.
Utah started to test the UW defense in the second half when Paola van der Veen forced a save from Kaylyn Smith in the 49th minute. The Ute defenders rose to the occasions once more in the 51st minute, getting a block in on a Shannon Simon try.
Van der Veen came close once more in the 54th minute as the action went back and forth. Nelson stopped Dominique Bond-Flasza and then Utah blocked a Havana McElvaine attempt. Nelson would be called into action again in the 71st minute when she stoned Shaye Villanueva.
Utah had a chance to double its lead in the 76th minute but Van der Veen had a shot blocked by a UW defender. Then, in the waning seconds, Nelson held on to a Lisa Jensen effort to seal the shutout. It was the freshman's third of the season and Utah's sixth shutout in nine games this year.
Utah is back in action next weekend with games at Arizona State on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. MT and Arizona on Sunday at 2 p.m. MT
