SALT LAKE CITY – Utah women's basketball fell 77-58 to No. 13 Stanford Friday night at the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
The Utes (12-4, 1-4) remained a threat to the Cardinal (14-3, 4-1) through most of the first half, but the long-time powerhouse Stanford took an 11-point advantage at the half.
"I thought our effort was better," head coach
Lynne Roberts expressed. "We did a lot of things better, but that start of the fourth quarter crushed us defensively. I am proud of our team for bouncing back. All around, tonight was much better from last weekend."
Senior wing
Paige Crozon picked up her second double-double of the season scoring 10 points, including two 3-pointers, and pulling down 10 rebounds.
Junior forward
Emily Potter led the Utes offensively with 15 points while also grabbing six rebounds and swatting six shots to tie her season-high of six blocks. Junior wing
Malia Nawahine dished out a career-high seven assists while also scoring nine points and grabbing four rebounds.
"I think she was looking to pass it a little more than usual which is good," Roberts stated about Nawahine "Seven assists is great. She did a good job and she was flying around on defense for us."
Stanford took a 5-0 lead on back-to-back turnovers from the Utes before junior wing
Tanaeya Boclair knocked down a jump shot to put Utah on the board. Crozon connected on a 3-pointer in front of the Stanford bench to tie the game, 5-5.
A miscue getting back on defense for the Utes resulted in another Cardinal 3-pointer from Karlie Samuelson for the lead. Stanford continued with a 9-0 running, forcing Utah to call a timeout trailing 17-7. The Utes broke the spell on a layup from freshman wing
Megan Jacobs on an assist from Nawahine, 17-9. The Cardinal's Samuelson hit her third 3-pointer for a 20-9 lead to end the first quarter.
Sophomore wing
Daneesha Provo opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer to make it an eight-point game, 20-12. Potter connected under the basket and Provo hit another three for a five-point game, 22-17. Utah kept the half close, but Stanford clawed out to a 35-24 lead heading into the locker room.
Utah edged the Cardinal on the boards with 21 rebounds, but Stanford's Samuelson had 12 points at the half from 3-point range. Crozon and Provo each had six points for the Utes on 2-of-2 shooting form beyond the arc.
Stanford open the second half with an and-one opportunity to extend its lead, 37-24. Utah closed within single-digits on a 3-pointer from Boclair. Stanford pulled ahead again, but two big plays from Provo gave the Utes a push. Provo hit a step-back three, grabbed a steal on the opposite side of the floor and an assist to Potter to trail by six, 40-34.
Erika Bean hit her first 3-pointer of her career, and first points of the ball game, at the buzzard to end the third quarter as Stanford led 50-42 at the end of the period.
"In the first quarter we had eight turnovers and took a couple of bad shots, and Stanford was up 11. I thought we did a nice job of battling back and at the end of the third quarter - we had some momentum and were only down eight. Then they scored eight unanswered points out of the jump," Roberts said.
In the first four minutes of the fourth quarter, Stanford connected on three 3-pointers to jump out to a 61-46 lead.
The Cardinal pulled out to a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter, 70-50, on 58-percent shooting from the floor at the media timeout. Utah scored back-to-back baskets out of the timeout, but Stanford never let up as the Utes went scoreless for the final three minutes of action. The Cardinal finished the fourth quarter shooting 50 percent from the floor and 67 percent from 3-point range.
Utah hosts No. 24 California Sunday at noon at the Jon M. Huntsman Center for more conference action. The game will be broadcast on the Pac-12 Network and over the air on ESPN700.
"We are prepared for Cal," Roberts said. "We have the scout ready to roll. Cal is really athletic and the key to beating them is rebounding because they are very long and athletic. That will be a tough one."
The Utes defeated the Bears twice during the 2015-16 season, but fell in overtime during the conference tournament for a 2-1 mark last season against California.
