PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - After weather wrecked havoc during the first day of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, the Utes finally got on the court Saturday.
No. 2 seed David Micevksi knocked off Woravin Kumthonkittihul of San Francisco, 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals of the singles bracket. In the Round of 16, Slava Shaniyan was beaten by Dane Esses of Pepperdine, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, while
Dan Little fell to No. 4 seed Pedro Iamachkine of Pepperdine, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.
Shaniyan and Little each won their first matches of the day with the freshman topping Guilherme Galuao of Pepperdine, 6-1, 6-0 and the sophomore beating Greg Wischer of Boise State, 6-1, 6-4.
Four Utes suffered losses in the opening round with
Azat Hankuliyev and
Egbert Weverink falling in straight sets.
Joe Woolley won the first set against Harvey Shackleton of Boise State, but dropped the next two and the match.
Parker McGuiness battled back to even his match at one set apiece, but fell in the third and deciding round, 7-6.
In the consolation bracket, Weverink and McGuiness went head-to-head with Parker retiring during the first set.
