Utes win consolation match at ITA event
COLUMBUS - Utah Men's Tennis dominated Denver in the consolation match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend event at Ohio State on Sunday, 4-0
"We have not beaten Denver for a long time so I am really happy for the guys to come up with a win," head coach Roeland Brateanu said. "This was a lot closer that the score indicated. We are fortunate to come up with a win because Denver played some very tough tennis out there."
Utah earned the early edge by taking the doubles point. Egbert Weverink and Santiago Sierra defeated Pedro Del Valle and Jesse Ruder-Hook, 6-3 at the No. 2 position while Slava Shaniyan and Parker McGuiness won by the identical score at the No. 3 spot.Â
Shaniyan continued his strong play in singles action with a 7-6, 6-3 victory over Wyatt Lovera. Dan Little, competing at the No. 2 position, cruised to a victory over Yannik James, 7-6, 6-4 as the Utes took a 3-0 lead. Sierra finished things off for Utah by rallying for a win at the No. 3 spot, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 over Alex Glasson. The other three singles matches were called, all tied at one set apiece.
Utah returns to action next weekend with matches against this very same Denver outfit (Sat. 1 p.m.), Northern Arizona (Sun., 9 a.m.) and Montana State (Sun., 1 p.m.) at the Eccles Tennis Center.
