SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Soccer dropped its third-straight Pac-12 contest this evening, 3-0 to No. 2 Stanford.
"Stanford is a terrific team and put us under a lot of pressure," head coach
Rich Manning said. "They tested us in ways that will make us better. We showed some good fight and were able to create some moments but this game showed that we need to be more consistent in those areas. Â We'll keep plugging away and get ready for Sunday's game versus Cal."
The Cardinal showed their quality from the kickoff forcing a save from
Carly Nelson just 17 seconds into the contest. After Nelson denied Andi Sullivan, Jordan DiBiasi smacked one against the left post. Four minutes later, she headed in her fifth goal of the season off a cross from Tegan McGrady.
In the second half, Stanford doubled its lead in the 53
rd minute as Michelle Xiao streaked past a pair of defenders and netted her fifth of the year for a 2-0 lead.
Utah had earned a handful of corner kicks in the contest but the Cardinal defenders had done a nice job protecting goalkeeper Lauren Rood.
Ella Ballstaedt finally fired one that narrowly sailed wide in the 54
th minute.
Stanford quickly responded as Kyra Carusa benefitted from a big deflection off a Utah defender to find herself alone in front of goal for her ninth of the year.
Utah continued to fight until the end as
Tatum Thornton fired wide and
Natalee Wells had a try blocked out of play for the team's fourth and final corner of the evening.
Utah is back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. against No. 20 Cal. The game can be seen live on the Pac-12 Network and Pac-12.com/live
