Quotes from Lynne Roberts Weekly Press Conference

Opening Statement…
"We are in finals week right now, so I know that the players are stressed out with all of that. We take care of class work this week. We don't play until Monday up at Utah State in Logan, so we have some time here to get healthy and get better. We will work on ourselves for a little bit. We had a stretch there where we were playing games it felt like every other day, so sometimes you don't have time to focus on yourself. That is kind of what we are doing now. We are coming off a tough loss at BYU on Saturday, but it was a game that we will definitely learn from and get better from. So, it is kind of a nice week here at home where we can focus on ourselves and get back to doing what we want to do."

On playing another in-state rival at Utah State on Monday…
"Last year we played just about everyone in Utah and I think we went 5-0. This year, we played Weber State on the road and got that win and then played BYU on Saturday and now we play Utah State on Monday. I think for us we are a little bit more like the hunted in-state. Those teams and those players, they come ready to play and compete and our players need to be ready for that. We always want to win the in-state games and be the best team in Utah. At Utah State is always tough. They actually beat BYU a few days before we played them. They will be ready to play and feeling confident. Those are tough games for our situation to go on the road and play a team that wants to beat you badly. We have to be ready for that."

On if the high-emotion in-state games help heading into Pac-12 play…
"I think it would be silly for us to not play the in-state teams, but I say that understanding the risk. Our job as coaches is to get our team ready to play whoever we are playing. If we come into it and take them a little more lightly than we should, then we deserve to lose. That is why you play the games and that is why it is our job to prepare our team no matter who you are playing. I think it is good for our sport. My objective here at Utah is to make women's basketball relevant and I think playing regional and local games matters. Is it a little bit risky for me to do, maybe, but my job is to get our team ready regardless of who we are playing and to continue to grow the sport in the state of Utah."

On how they will approach the gap between games this week…
"It will be nine days between games which is a good thing, but then you think about it and realize that is a long time. We are going to take a few days off and it will be a lot of self-scout. I always tell the team that the intention of non-conference is to learn what you are good at and learn what you are not good at and then to get better. We want to develop players and figure out who we are, what makes us go and what causes problems. So, I think through nine games we have learned that. This week we want to spend some time on what has given us some issues so far. We also want to continue to work on skill development. When you are in-season and you are playing a game and then the next day you are preparing for the next game, you kind of get away from the skill development piece of really working on getting shots up or whatever it is. So we want to work on that this week."

On what this week will do to help develop the younger players on the team…
"I think at this point if you are new to college basketball, you are starting to get a little fatigued. We've been going since Oct. 2, but at this point too you start looking forward to conference play, but it is also important that we don't get ahead of ourselves. I think this week can be good to catch your breath physically as well. They can get the physical therapy that they need, take care of themselves. Then we will get four days off from Christmas, so that can be really valuable in terms of getting your body right for the rigors of the Pac-12."

On what she thinks they are doing well and what she thinks they need to work on…
"The BYU game was kind of exposing to us in terms of the fact that we hadn't played in a really intense game like that. We had played some good games, but I think things had kind of been smooth sailing for us for the most part. Even though we had lost to Alabama, we went on to win six in a row and our margin of victory was a lot. We had beaten some good teams, we were playing pretty well and we were playing at home. This BYU game was our chance to go on the road in a hostile environment and in a very emotionally charged game, and it kind of exposed us. I think that game was kind of unique though. In terms of what it exposed, I think we have to get mentally tougher in those kinds of games. I told the team that it felt like a Pac-12 game in terms of the intensity, the crowd, the runs, but we will learn from that. I think up until that point I think we have learned that we are pretty doggone good defensively and when we are dialed in and locked into the game plan, we are pretty good. Offensively we are much better. Our shot selection is better and our turnovers are down. We have to continue to shoot the three better. We have to be prepared for teams to kind of slow us down with a zone, and that will have to come from us as coaches. We hadn't done much work against the zone because teams that we were playing hadn't played it and then BYU threw one on us and we really didn't respond very well to that. So we have to continue to get better against zones, taking and making good shots and then just hang our hat on what we are good at which is our defensive game. We are pretty good defensively with rebounding. When we head into Pac-12 play, we are really going to be tested."

On if she will look to fine-tune some things heading into Pac-12 play…
"I think working on the things that I just mentioned with shot selection, working on our zone offense, I think we have to clean those things up. My intention and my hope is to play well these next two games and go into Christmas with some momentum. It is less about outcome, but let's just play well. We have 80 minutes of basketball before Pac-12 play starts and we need to play well for 80 minutes and let the outcome take care of itself. I always tell our team that great players and great teams are consistent, so if we want to make a move in the Pac-12, we have to be more consistent. So, that is what I am hoping to see in these next two games and in the next week of practice."
