Utah Track and Field Claims Four Event Titles at Utah/Weber State Spring Classic

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah track and field team grabbed four event titles, including a mark in the long jump that broke the McCarthey Family Track and Field facility record, at the sole home meet of the year for the Utes on Friday night in Salt Lake City.

"It was a really good night. I thought our kids competed very hard and put on great performances. It was a great meet and it was an amazing job by everyone involved in putting it on," head coach Kyle Kepler said. "It is a big effort to run this event and I think it is important that we do. Our kids deserve it because it is their one chance per year to compete in front of their friends and family. The girls competed their guts out tonight and in some of those events the wind was really wicked, but they ran tough."

Freshman Ann Wingeleth broke the McCarthey Family Track and Field facility record in the long jump after posting a mark of 20 feet, 1.5 inches (6.13m). The previous facility record (5.95m) was set in 2015 by Carley McCutchen from Montana State. Wingeleth's long jump mark is a personal best and ranks second all-time in Utah outdoor history.

"Ann had a huge night in the long jump and took advantage of the wind. She had a fantastic night and we know there is more there from her," Kepler said.

Also competing in the long jump, freshman Holly Stallman placed sixth overall after recording a mark of 17 feet, 11.5 inches (5.47m). Junior Madison Lanford placed 17th with a mark of 15 feet, 11 inches (4.85m), while sophomore Lauren McCluskey recorded a mark of 14 feet, 2.5 inches (4.33m) to finish in 21st place.

Sophomore Christine Glasmann opened the meet for Utah in the javelin. Glasmann claimed first place, winning the event for the second year in a row at the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic. Glasmann threw a mark of 148 feet, 5 inches (45.23m) to take the javelin event.

"Chrissy won for the second year in a row and took care of business out on the home track. She threw in a pretty big head wind and that is not easy to do, but she got the job done," Kepler stated.

McCluskey placed 12th in the javelin with a mark of 90 feet, 11 inches (27.71m). Lanford rounded out the javelin for the Utes, throwing a mark of 82 feet, 2 inches (25.05m) to finish in 14th place.

Senior Dana Snell was the sole Ute to compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase and took the event title after posting a time of 11:24.04.

"Dana Snell won her event on senior night. She is our only senior because other girls in her class redshirted, and we are very happy for her. She was down early in the race but made a nice comeback. Her efficient hurdling form really came into play when everyone was getting tired running in the wind and she held up well. She took advantage of a race that didn't necessarily start her way but definitely finished her way," Kepler said.

In the 400-meter dash, Alissa Atisme competed unattached and placed first overall with a time of 55.49 seconds. Sophomore Caitlin Faust placed third with a personal best time of 57.13 seconds. Grace Englund also competed unattached and placed fourth with a time of 57.47 seconds.

Also in the 400, freshman Brooke Martin placed eighth overall with a personal best time of 58.22 seconds. Junior Rhianna Williams placed tenth with a time of 58.94 seconds, sophomore Mesa Weidle followed in 11th with a time of 58.98 seconds, freshman Nicole Griffiths placed 12th with a time of 59.59 seconds, while sophomore Sadie Wassum rounded out the Utes with a time of 1:00.44 to place 16th.

In the 100-meter dash, Stallman recorded a personal best time of 12.03 seconds to earn a fifth-place finish. Sophomore Raynee Helm placed 10th with a personal best time of 12.37 seconds.

Utah's 4x100 meter relay team kicked off Friday night's running events and finished in third place with a time of 48.78 seconds. The relay team was comprised of Helm, Wingeleth, Lanford, and Stallman.

In the 800-meter run, junior Dakota Grossman posted a personal best time of 2:15.20 to lead the way for Utah, finishing fourth overall. Freshmen Sarah Newton and Melissa Taggart placed 11th and 12th, respectively. Newton recorded a time of 2:17.63, while Taggart posted a personal best time of 2:18.76. Rounding out the 800, sophomore Megan Perkins placed 16th with a time of 2:20.07.

Three Utes competed in the 100-meter hurdles with Lanford leading the way, finishing in 16th place with a time 15.60 seconds. Freshman Piper Wehrli recorded a personal best time of 15.92 seconds to place 19th. McCluskey followed behind Wehrli with a time of 15.93 seconds to finish in 20th place.

"Hopefully we will continue to compete like we did today. We have to go up to Weber State tomorrow and be tough, focused, and bring some energy. It is hard the night after your home meet because you are excited from tonight. It is a chance for us to improve and get better," Kepler said.

Utah will head up to Ogden to close out the Utah/Weber State Spring Classic with field events beginning at 10 a.m. MT at Stewart Stadium.
