Utes in the News: Football Ready For North Dakota

SALT LAKE CITY – After a full week of classes and practices, the Utes are in full swing as they head into game week as they prepare for the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Thursday, Aug. 31 at 5:30 p.m.

With the end of fall camp, head coach Kyle Whittingham made several announcements, including naming the starting quarterback with Tyler Huntley taking the reins. He also announced the return of Chase Hansen, who earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention last season.

On naming Tyler Huntley the starter…
"I empowered Troy Taylor to make that decision and the buck stops here. If I disagree with any of the personnel decisions that are made, I certainly can override them, but 99 times out of 100, me and the assistant coaches are on the same page. Tyler has a lot of up sides. He is very athletic. It was an intense competition and there was very little separation. With Tyler's mobility and with the up side that we think he has, that is the direction we went."

On how much Tyler has grown since last season…
"If you talk about from last fall to now, he is a totally different guy. He has become a guy that is working within the framework of the offense instead of improvising."

On what all he has been doing to prepare to get back on the field…
"Lots of physical therapy. Every day and all day. It was pretty rigorous and pretty tough. But it was what I wanted to do and what I needed to do."

On how it feels being back on the field…
"There are a few things I am trying to work on right now. It feels good to be back out here. I get pretty impatient when I have to go off the field, so staying healthy is big to me right now."

After 20 practices in fall camp, the Utes have turned their attention to the regular season and the Fighting Hawks.

The game is set to kick off at 5:30 p.m. MT at Rice-Eccles Staidum on Thursday, Aug. 31.
