Utes Wrap up First Day of Competition Play at ITA Invitational

LAS VEGAS –The University of Utah men's tennis team completed the first round of doubles, first round of singles, second round of singles and consolation singles today at the ITA Regional Tournament.

In the first round of singles, No. 1 seed Dan Little defeated BYU's Mateo Vereau with a final score of 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the second round. Slava Shainyan then defeated Daniel Dudockin of Nevada, 7-6(5), 6-3, to move on.

Little and Shainyan were then unable to card victories in the second round, as they fell short to both of their opponents. In consolation singles, Russell Benkaim was victorious against Martin Simecek of New Mexico State, with a final score of 7-5, 6-4. David Micevski was also able to snag a win in the first round of consolation singles, defeating Utah State's Rithvik Bollipalli, 6-2, 7-6.

In the first round of doubles, all three University of Utah teams were able to move onto the second round. Shainyan and Micevski knocked off BYU's Gajardo and Tullis with a final score of 8-4. At the No. 4 seed, Little and Azat Hankuliyev were victorious as they beat out Pease and Smalley from Northern Colorado with a score of 8-4. The No. 2 seed Benkaim and Randy Cory easily moved past Vereau and Noguira of BYU, with a score of 8-2, to advance.

The ITA Regional Tournament will continue tomorrow with the round of 16 doubles, doubles consolation, round of 16 singles, singles consolation, quarterfinal singles, singles consolation and doubles consolation.
