Sedrick Barefield totaled 19 points and sophomore
Donnie Tillman chipped in with 15 points in the team's annual Night with the Utes exhibition Wednesday evening at the Huntsman Center. Red topped the White team by a total of 70-56.
The night began with the Runnin' Utes throwing down some dunks. The fans in attendance were in charge of sending the best few players to the final, which was highlighted by jams from
Charles Jones, Jr.,
Both Gach,
Donnie Tillman and
Timmy Allen. All four players had two dunks apiece and Jones came away victorious following a 360-degree dunk. Gach, did however, have the fans on their feet after going a la Michael Jordan and attempting a dunk from the free throw line. Despite missing, it was still a crowd-pleaser, none the less.
Both men's and women's teams followed with a three-point contest. The opening group of men's shooters won the first round, 42-41, but the second group of women's shooters notched the contest with a win with a score of 42-38 in the final round.
In the first half of the men's intrasquad scrimmage, the Red team took a 34-31 lead into break. The Red squad was led by redshirt freshman
Vante Hendrix, who tallied 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting overall and a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range. Freshman
Both Gach, who tallied nine points, went 3-of-4 from the field and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the charity stipe.
Tillman led all players at the break with 12 points for the White team. He was 4-of-7 from the field, which included a 2-of-3 effort from beyond the arc. Freshman
Timmy Allen was 3-of-4 from the field and had seven points at the break.
Both teams shot well through the 16-minute first half, as the Red team tallied a .462 shooting percentage overall and a .313 percentage from downtown. The White team shot .476 percent from the floor, which included a .375 percentage from three-point range.
The second half saw the Red team score 36 points, while holding the White team to 25 points, for a final score of 70-56 in favor of the Red squad.
A few players from each squad switched sides at the half, but Barefield led the way with his 19 points overall, going 7-for-13 from the field and notching a perfect 4-of-4 effort from the free throw line. He also posted four assists on the evening.
Tillman finished the night with 15 points on 5-of-11 shooting and grabbing a team-high nine rebounds. He had the only blocked shot on the night and managed to register a pair of steals in the contest.
Junior
Brandon Morley was 6-of-14 from the field, which included a 3-of-7 effort from downtown to finish with 15 points, as well. He was tied for second on the team with seven boards, matching rebounding efforts from both
Riley Battin and Allen.
Gach finished the contest going 6-of-7 from the field and 2-of-2 from the line for 15 points. He led the squad in both assists (6) and steals (3).
The Utes will officially get the season underway on Thursday, Nov. 1, when it host College of Idaho in an exhibition contest. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. MT at the Huntsman Center.
