ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of Utah men's tennis team defeated the University of New Mexico earlier today with a final score of 4-2, improving to 13-1 overall on the season.
"What a great team performance today. To beat a good New Mexico in Albuquerque is such a great feat," said head coach
Roeland Brateanu. "We fought like lions today and we will need another Herculean effort again tomorrow against UCSB."
In doubles play, the team consisting of
Joe Woolley and
Egbert Weverink defeated Ricky Hernandez Tong and Dominic West at the No. 2 position, with a score of 6-4.
Dan Little and
Azat Hankuliyev then sealed the doubles point for the Utes with a win on the No. 3 court against Sean Baklini and Stepan Holis, 6-4.
Randy Cory started things off at the No. 5 position with a win in singles against New Mexico's Tim Buttner with a final score of 7-6, 6-2.
Dan Little then put in a victory of his own at the No. 1 spot against Bart Van Leijsen, with a score of 7-6, 6-4. Then to seal the victory for the University of Utah men's tennis team,
Egbert Weverink edged out Jorge Escutia on the No. 4 court, with a final score of 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The Utes will be back in action tomorrow against UC Santa Barbara in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with the match set to start at 1 p.m. MST.
