Spring Football: Thoughts On Practice

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah football program enjoyed the sunshine today during its fourth practice of the spring session.
Head coach Kyle Whittingham recaps the first week of spring practice...
On the first week of practice...
"It was a really good week. Today was the first day in full pads and I thought they handled it well. We didn't have any live work but there was a lot of physicality in practice. They played smart. It was a good practice and we got a lot done."
On what he has seen from the quarterbacks...
"They are very sharp and making good decisions. They are going to the right place with the ball with very few turnovers. They are on track. It is a great quarterback situation for us and I am excited to see how it plays out."
On if anyone stepped forward this week in position battles...
"It is too early to tell. Everyone is working hard and there is a good attitude out here with a lot of willingness and passion."
On Jack Tuttle being unique as a young quarterback...
"He is mature beyond his years. You would think he is a 28-year-old veteran out here. He should still be in high school when you think about it, which is remarkable when you talk about what he is doing here, how he carries himself. He was voted on the leadership counsel after being here for a like a month, so that is a sign right there on what his teammates think of him. He has been as advertised and we are excited to see his development."
On the benefits of having such strong quarterbacks in practice for the other players on the team...
"The more talent you have at every position, the better off you are going to be. It is a great look for the second and third defensive units when you are facing the second or third quarterback that are also quality guys."
On the competition on the defensive line this year...
"Leki Fotu is the leader of the interior guys and Bradlee Anae is the leader of the outside guys. We feel that we are going to be deep and talented at that position and we are still waiting on a few guys that will be here this summer from this recruiting class so we think when it is all said and done, it is going to be a really good group."
On if Bronson Boyd could be a premier receiver...
"He has the talent, he has the tools, he's got the right mentality, he has a great work ethic and he has to just keep progressing and polishing things up. There is a lot of fine detail to the receiver position. The receiver you have to know the details of the offense and the details of the techniques and he has come along really well."
