Spring Football: Day One In The Books

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah football program got back on the gridiron today as they completed the first day of spring practice.Â
Â
Public Invited:Â In a change from recent years, all outdoor practices and scrimmages will be open to the public. Practices held inside due to inclement weather will be closed to the public for space and safety reasons. Weekday practices begin at 3 p.m. at the Eccles Football Center practice fields, while Saturday practices start at 10 a.m., including two scrimmages in Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Red-White game will kick off at 11 a.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Head coach Kyle Whittingham on the first day of spring practice…
"It was good with good energy, which it always is on day one. It is apparent to me that the offense is much further ahead than it was last year, which we expected, but it was good to see. We are in a much better place as opposed to last year."

Whittingham on the quarterbacks play today…
"I thought they looked very sharp. All four of them got reps today, but the top three guys looked ready to go."

Whittingham on why he thinks the offense looks further along…
"Execution, assignments, tempo, just everything."

Whittingham on Tyler Huntley putting on muscle in the off-season…
"He is still a little way off pace on where he wants to be, but he is making progress. That needs to continue during the time between now and when we line up on Aug. 30."

Whittingham on what he wants out of Jack Tuttle this spring…
"I want him to compete, take charge and have command of the offense. I want him to have repetitive accuracy when he throws. Today he was all of that. He is dialed in. He has spent a lot of time the last couple of months studying the offense."

Associate head coach Gary Andersen on being back at Utah…
"From the top of the administration all the way down, it is about the student-athlete. A lot of people preach that, but it is in the actions here at Utah and that is who I am. I refuse to change from being about the students and Kyle's program is run that way. It is a blessing to be a part of it."

Andersen on if being a head coach has made him a better position coordinator…
"It is fun to be back in a room with kids, it is just fantastic. I will be here to be leaned on by young coaches, old coaches and anyone who needs direction. I have no agenda. My agenda every day for me is to coach my young men that I get to be associated with like the defensive line and help Kyle in any way that I can. It is a big breath of fresh air to be back in the room with kids consistently and if I want to sit and watch film for five hours one day there are much less distractions. I can focus on those defenses that I want to look at or the techniques of the young men. So, it has been awesome. And when you have a group of kids like I have in the defensive line, it is a special group with lots of great personalities. It has been a lot of fun."

Offensive coordinator Troy Taylor on if he has a sense of what the offense is going to look like…
"I know these guys really well now, so watching them grow and become confident in their abilities has been good. With spring football, you are naturally going to be missing some guys and sometimes it is going to be a little ugly because you'll have three or four guys that will be players for you that aren't in there."

Quarterback Tyler Huntley on competing against the other QBs on the squad this spring…
"They are great to have right behind me. I am able to teach them up and they are pushing me every day. It is just fun to have them with me."Â
