Spring Football: Quarterbacks/Running Backs Preview

SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah football program wrapped up its final practice today before heading into the annual Red White Game on Saturday, April 14. The game is set to kick off at 11 a.m. in Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Offensive coordinator Troy Taylor is heading into his second season with the Utes after implementing a new offense that featured a second-team All-Pac-12 receiver in Darren Carrington II and a 1,000-yard rusher in Zack Moss. It was a balanced offense throughout the season with 16 players catching passes and 11 players carrying the ball.

With five running backs on the spring roster, the Utes have been able to develop invaluable depth at the position with the return of Moss and Armand Shyne. Add in Devonta'e Henry-Cole, who will return this fall, and redshirt freshman TJ Green and Utah will be set to have another explosive backfield in 2018.
At quarterback, Utah boasts dual threat Tyler Huntley for his junior season after he was able to throw for 2,411 yards (15 TD) and rush for 537 yards (6 TD), despite battling injuries. There will also be a surge of youth at the quarterback position this year with redshirt freshmen Jason Shelley and Drew Lisk and true freshman Jack Tuttle all looking for action.

QB #1 Tyler Huntley (6-1 | 190 | Jr. | Dania, Fla.)
Is 6-4 overall as the starting quarterback at Utah ... played in and started 10 games last season ... 199-of-312 passing (2,411 yards, 15 TD) ... second on the team in rushing in 2017 (537 yards, 6 TDs) ... second among Pac-12 quarterbacks in rushing yards per game (53.7).
2017 Highlights: Career-bests in passing (341 yards, 4 TDs) and total offense (394 yards) against San Jose State ... career-high 93 rushing yards vs. UCLA.
Fun Fact: Went to high school with current Utah football athletes Zack Moss and Demari Simpkins.
QB #15 Jason Shelley (5-11 | 193 | R-Fr. | Little Elm, Texas)
Redshirted last season ... was ranked 12th in the country among dual-threat QBs by 247Sports and 27th by ESPN coming out of high school ... two-time all-state honorable mention ... two-time District MVP.
Fun Fact: Was also a two-time all-district selection and district Newcomer of the Year in baseball in high school.
RB #2 Zack Moss (5-10 | 212 | Jr. | Hialeah Gardens, Fla.)
Played in 13 games with 12 starts in 2017 ... became a 1,000-yard rusher as a sophomore (1,173), leading the team in yards, carries (214), yards per game (90.2) and rushing touchdowns (10) ... led the team in all-purpose yards (1,416) ... has five-career 100-yard rushing games.
2017 Highlights: Career-high 196 rushing yards (2 TDs) against Colorado ... career-best 221 all-purpose yards against the Buffaloes as well.
Fun Fact: He is related to Santana Moss, who was an All-American at Miami who had more than 10,000 yards receiving during a 14-year NFL career.
RB #6 Armand Shyne (5-11 | 210 | Jr. | Oakland, Calif.)
Sustained an injury in fall camp in 2017 that kept him out all season ... played in five games in 2016 with one start before suffering a season-ending injury ... led the team in rushing up to his injury (373 yards, 78 carries, 4 TDs).
Fun Fact: He enjoys bowling.
