STOCKTON, Calif. – Utah's
Blake Tomlinson moved up three spots and is now in a tie for 10th place following a second-round score of 2-under par (70) at the NCAA Stockton Regional, which is taking place at The Reserve at Spanos Park. Tomlinson heads into tomorrow's final round with a combined score of 4-under par (70-70=140).
"Blake played a lot better today, but just scored the same as yesterday," said Utah head coach
Garrett Clegg. "He had a four-hole stretch that hurt him in the middle of the round, where he made two bogeys and had a three-putt par, but he came back strong with three consecutive birdies to finish the round. Those birdies were huge to keep him in the tournament."
Tomlinson opened the second round paring the first hole and then carding a birdie to go 1-uder par at the par-4 second hole. Tomlinson gave the shot back after recording a bogey on hole No. 3, but later managed to get back to under par with a birdie on the par-5 hole No. 6. For the second-consecutive day, the freshman managed to go out in 1-under par after paring out the final three holes and carding a score of 35 on the front nine holes.
Tomlinson registered his sixth-straight par at hole No. 12, but then registered a bogey on the par-3 hole No. 13. He followed with another bogey at No. 14 to go 1-over par, but then rattled off three consecutive birdies at holes No. 15, 16 and 17 to get back to 2-under par for the day. He closed out the round paring the par-4 18th hole.
"Today was almost the complete opposite, even though the score didn't show it," Tomlinson said. "I hit a lot of greens, but could not really make any puts. Overall, I still think it was a solid day."
Tomlinson, who currently ranks as the second-lowest individual on the week, is 1-over par on par-3's for the week, even par on par-4's and 5-under par on the par-5's, which ranks tied for fifth out of the 75 players in the field. UTEP's Charles Corner leads all individuals with a two-day score of 6-under par (69-69=138). Stanford's Brandon Wu continues to lead the field overall with a combined score of 10-under par (67-67=134).
Tomlinson's 36-hole score of 140 ranks third-lowest in school history through the first two rounds of an NCAA Regional. He follows only
Dustin Pimm's scores of 66-68=134 (2006) and 69-70=139 (2007).
Tomlinson concludes his regional appearance tomorrow, teeing off in the third and final round at 10:04 a.m. PT/11:04 a.m. MT.
