STOCKTON, Calif. – Utah freshman
Blake Tomlinson concluded his NCAA Regional appearance finishing in a tie for ninth place overall and second among individual qualifiers with a three-day score of 5-under par (70-70-71=211).
The Salt Lake City native finished four shots behind UTEP's Charles Corner (-9, 207), missing a chance to move onto the NCAA Championships.
"Aside from the last two holes, I played great today," said Tomlinson. "It was a great experience and I learned a lot this week. I will continue to keep working on my game and be better prepared for next season."
Tomlinson, who was Utah's first NCAA Regional qualifier since 2007, carded a 1-under (71) in Wednesday's final round, carding three birdies, an eagle, two bogeys and one costly double-bogey, to go along with 11 pars on the day.
After recording an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole, Tomlinson would give a shot back following a bogey on hole No. 8, giving him a score of 1-under par for the third straight day through the first nine holes. He registered birdies at holes No. 11, 13 and 16 to push him at 4-under par for the day and 8-under par for the tournament, but the double bogey at No. 17 and bogey at the 18th hole doomed his chances at moving onto the next tournament this season.
"Blake was right in there with two holes to play today," said Utah head golf coach
Garrett Clegg. "He really played solidly. He had a fantastic chip-in eagle on the par-5 sixth hole and chipped in again for birdie on the par-3 13th hole, but in the end made a couple of mistakes and missed out on qualifying for nationals.
'As a staff we are exceptionally proud of what Blake accomplished this year. He had a phenomenal season and to cap it off with a top-10 finish in the NCAA Regional Championships is special. He has a bright future and will accomplish great things at the U."
Tomlinson's three-round score of 211 ranks second-lowest for a Utah golfer in the NCAA Regional, following only
Dustin Pimm's score of 210, which was set back in 2007. He and Pimm are the only two golfers in school history to register a top-10 finish in an NCAA Regional. Pimm finished in a tie for fifth place back in 2006.
