SAN FRANCISCO – Utah freshman golfer
Blake Tomlinson has been named to the Pac-12 All-Freshman Team, the league office announced on Thursday.
"I am really proud of Blake," said Utah head golf coach
Garrett Clegg. "This is an honor for him to be recognized as one of the top-five freshmen in the conference. He has had a fantastic year and has been our most consistent performer, week-in and week-out, which is extremely impressive to do as a freshman. The all-conference awards are voted on by the Pac-12 coaches and for them to recognize Blake's year as one of the top freshmen is a special award for him."
Tomlinson, who just became Utah's first golfer to qualify for the NCAA Regional since 2007 on Wednesday, also becomes Utah's first all-conference selection of any kind since that same year. Utah's last all-conference selection was
Dustin Pimm, who earned Mountain West Conference first team honors following the 2006-07 season.
Tomlinson carded a 71.6 strokes-per-round average over 34 rounds in his first season with the Utes. He tallied a pair of top-10 finishes individually, which included his season-best finish at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate, where he carded a 3-under par (64-75-74=213) en route to a tie for fourth-place. His first-round score of 8-under par (64) is tied for the team's individual season-low overall on the season.
Tomlinson registered a team-best 18 rounds of par or better, which included carding scores in the 60's, in six of his 34 rounds. He was Utah's scoring leader in three of 11 tournaments this season.
The Salt Lake City native carded five eagles on the season, which ranks tied for 55
th in the nation, according to GolfStat.com. Meanwhile, his team-best 134 birdies ranks among the nation's top-20, as he comes in a tie for 18
th in the category.
Tomlinson will continue his freshman campaign competing as an individual in the NCAA Stockton Regional, which will be played May 14-16, at The Reserve at Spanos Park.
