2018 Camp Kyle: Utes Return To The Gridiron

SALT LAKE CITY – It was a day of returns for the Utah football program. The return of football with the first official day of fall camp, the return of players from injury and missions, and the return of the search for a championship.Â

Today marked the first of 16 practices that the Utes will hold during 2018 "Camp Kyle," running from Aug. 1-18. The first five days will be a part of the NCAA mandatory acclimatization period where the Utes will practice in shorts, jerseys and helmets the first two days, adding shoulder pads on Friday and Saturday.Â

Utah had multiple newcomers along with players returning from injury and church missions participate today including Britain Covey and Marquise Blair.Â

Offensive Coordinator Troy Taylor on Britain Covey…
"He is incredibly intelligent. He is a humble kid and humble people tend to work hard. He is as advertised, actually probably better."

At the end of practice, head coach Kyle Whittingham addressed the media and talked about the first day of camp.Â
On how he feels Derrick Vickers fits into the offense…
"We will find out. He is a great athlete and a big play guy. We are aware that he is a pure slot receiver, but maybe he is a part-time running back too. It is only day one. We will find a niche for him and a role, it is just a matter of getting him up to speed on the offense since he was an 11thhour qualifier for us. It is going to be a little bit of time before he settles in and gets comfortable. He is a great addition to our team and we will find a spot for him to help us out."
On if he saw the intensity he wanted to see in the first day…
"Absolutely. It was a good practice. This group has been working hard since January. I didn't expect anything different than what we got."
On Britain Covey's first practice back…
"Britain is back. He has all of his quickness and speed, he just lacks a little bit of endurance right now. That is something that will come back in these weeks. He is what we hoped he would be as far as his return."
On if it is the plan for Tyler Huntley, Jason Shelley and Jack Tuttle to all get reps in camp…
"That is the plan. No real timeline. Tyler right now is the clear-cut No. 1, but Jason and Jack are battling for that No. 2 spot."
On if there will be much tackling or "live" play this camp…
"It doesn't really do offensive guys much good to be tackled but then defensive guys need to tackle. We will get it done with some limited tackling against the offense, get into some scout work in a couple of weeks and some defense on defense tackling. But we have to be smart and we have to do what's best for the team in its entirety and that is not to beat each other up. We have to get this team to August 30 healthy and that is the objective."
