2018 Camp Kyle: Newcomers Make A Splash

SALT LAKE CITY – Day 11 for Utah football's fall camp came and went today at the Eccles Football Center as the Utes continue to press on toward the start of the season.Â
The Utes were back at it today after their first scrimmage of fall camp that took place on Saturday at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Head coach Kyle Whittingham said they played about 70 plays that also included some special teams work.Â
Today at camp, the Utes had a special visitor in Pac-12 analyst Yogi Roth. Roth has worked as an analyst for ESPN and Fox as well as the Pac-12 Network.Â
Even with the scrimmage on Saturday, the big news in the media today was the addition of BYU transfer Francis Bernard to the 2018 roster. Bernard, a linebacker out of Herriman, Utah, will have two years to play two.Â
Whittingham on the addition of Bernard…
"It is great to have him in the program. It was a great effort on his part to get eligible and get where he needed to be to join our program. He worked hard and he is in no pads today and will go through that acclimatization period, but we can't wait to get him in full gear and get him going."Â
On where he thinks he will land on the depth chart…
"I don't know, haven't seen him play yet. We will find out when he gets in pads. This program is all about earning your way and nothing is giving to you. So we will see what he earns."
On his impression of Bernard's attitude coming into the program…
"It is great. He has a positive attitude. And like I said, he had some work to do to get here and he busted his rear end to get it all done and get here. That showed us a lot."Â
After a strong practice from top to bottom, UtahUtes.com caught up with redshirt freshman offensive lineman Nick Ford for a round of rapid fire questions.
Q: Favorite place to eat in Salt Lake City?
A:Â "I mean I'm a big dude, so I know where to get food at. So I'd say Blue Plate Diner or Park Café. Those two spots are good."
Q: What is your opinion on having breakfast for lunch or dinner?
A:Â "I mean breakfast food is good 24/7, 365."
Q: What is your favorite breakfast food?
A:Â "Corned beef hash. That is good. Maybe French toast."
Q: Do you have any hidden talents?
A:Â "Man I don't know. I can play the ukulele, piano, guitar. I can do cartwheels."
Q: Favorite activity to do outside of football?
A:Â "I'd probably say just playing music. I don't watch TV. So I like having music playing on my speaker. It's a big Sony speaker and it was like $300. Or just play whatever instrument I have on me at the time."
Q: If you could go pro in a sport other than football, what would it be?
A:Â "Surfing."
With this being the last week of fall camp, the Utes officially will wrap up with the annual Red Zone Fan Fest on Aug. 18.Â
