News Out Of Practice: Gearing Up

SALT LAKE CITY – With fall camp over and classes starting, it has been a busy week for the Utah football program as they continue to gear up for their season opener.Â
As of 6 p.m. today, the Utes are officially a week away from its game against Weber State. The game is set for a 6 p.m. kick on Thursday, Aug. 30.Â

With the excitement surrounding the program and the new season, Utah Athletics caught up with redshirt freshman Nick Fordtoday at practice to talk chalk and Utah football.Â

Like Ford said, the Utes are excited to line up against a team that isn't wearing red and white. For sophomore Britain Covey,he is just excited to line up and play with his teammates again.Â
On if being away from football was harder than three weeks of tough fall camp…
"Definitely being away from football for two years. I've enjoyed camp."
On if he is looking forward to playing again…
"I am so excited. We don't do much live work out here, so I am just waiting to get tackled and get that feeling back. I am excited."
On what he thinks the vibe has been of the team since getting back…
"We really believe this year. We did my freshman year and we had a really good team that year, but I see the same level of talent in this group and even more belief. We aren't entitled or anything. If people think we are overlooking Weber State, it is the complete opposite. This team is very locked in."

On how practice went today…
"It was a good practice. It was Thursday practice mentality. Starting tomorrow it is for real. Every day is actual game week prep. Hopefully we are ready to go."
On his impressions of Weber State…
"Defensively, they are very similar to us. Jay Hill was here for a number of years and runs a scheme similar to us. It is a heavy dose of man coverage. Offensively, Coach Schramm, who was at Fresno State a few years ago when we played them, took some of that. Anytime there is an opener, there is a lot of unknowns, so you have to be ready for anything. You have to keep your game plans pretty vanilla so that you can adjust and adapt, but we think we have a decent idea of what to expect, but like I said, you never know."
On what they are doing in preparation for Weber State…
"Fine tuning for Weber. Eliminate the mental mistakes and the drive killing mistakes with illegal procedures or missed assignments. You can't shoot yourself in the foot. You have to play clean and that is the objective."
On what the difference in mindset is having an experience starting quarterback…
"No difference other than we know what Tyler is all about and we know what he is capable of. So, there is not a great deal of difference other than that we have seen him extensively in live work now."
