Week 2 of Fall Camp Brings Out the Pads

Tackle drills begin as acclimatization period ends.
Contact Drills Begin
Full pads will be worn on Monday for the final day of the required acclimatization period and tackling will begin on Tuesday of this week. In another change from week one, practices will move from late afternoon to morning for the remainder of camp. The first scrimmage of the fall (like all practices, closed to the public) will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11. Media observation and interview opportunities are listed on the sidebar of this page.

Utah has checked in at No. 24 in Yahoo's preseason poll, adding to its No. 22 preseason Phil Steele ranking. The Utes were fourth among the 'others receiving votes' in the USA Today Coaches' preseason poll with 81 points … Utah director of athletics Mark Harlan has initiated a #RedFridayU campaign to encourage all Ute fans to wear red and 'flash the U' on Fridays … ESPN 700 radio's Bill Riley will have two new broadcast partners at this fall's Ute football games. Former Utah and NFL quarterback Scott Mitchell will handle the color commentary with former Ute punter Tom Hackett contributing as the sideline reporter.

Junior running back Devonta'e Henry-Cole will be out for the season with an injury. Henry-Cole played in 12 games last year with one start. He rushed for 279 yards and two touchdowns in 2017, averaging 5.1 yards per carry … Junior linebacker Bryant Pirtle (Louisville, Ky./Pima CC), who signed with Utah last December, has completed his academic requirements and will begin practice today. He will temporarily wear No. 54 but will be in No. 12 for the season … Sophomore Ali'i Niumatalolo has moved from linebacker to fullback. He also plays on special teams … True freshman Malone Mataele is getting reps at nickel back in addition to safety … Utah's offensive line is proving extremely versatile. Junior Johnny Capra and redshirt freshman Nick Ford can play all three positions (guard, center, tackle), senior Lo Falemaka and junior Paul Toala are taking reps at center and guard and junior Darrin Paulo is an option at both guard and tackle … Freshman walk-on defensive end Jaxson McBride (Bountiful, Utah/Woods Cross HS) has been added to the camp 110 roster.
