SAN FRANCISCO – Utah senior linebacker Chase Hansen was named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced today.
Â
Hansen, who was an all-conference safety for the Utes before moving to linebacker this season, was key in Utah's 17-6 road victory at Northern Illinois this past week. It is the first time Hansen has been honored as the Pac-12 Player of the Week.
Â
The Highland, Utah, native finished the game with 12 tackles (2.0 sacks, 2.5 TFL), an interception return for a touchdown and a fourth-quarter fumble recovery that stopped an NIU drive on first and 10.
Â
With Utah clinging to a 10-6 lead with under three minutes remaining, Hansen scored the final points of the game on a 40-yard return of an interception for a touchdown.
Â
One of Hansen's two sacks came on NIU's last offensive drive of the game, sending the Huskies back 15 yards on a first and 10. He secured the victory with a five-yard tackle for loss on fourth down for the Huskies.
Hansen and the Utes return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15 when they host Washington for their annual blackout game. The game will kick off at 8 p.m. MT and air on ESPN.
