Ola Makurat. Makurat, who will redshirt in 2018-19 due to NCAA transfer rules, comes to Utah from Liberty. Originally from Sierakowice, Poland, the 6-3 forward led Liberty to a Big South title and NCAA Tournament berth in 2018, averaging 7.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
Q: How did your interest in basketball begin?
A: Everything started very early because of my parents and their passion for basketball. It's the best gift I've ever received. It was always something more than just a game.
Q: What is your favorite part about playing basketball?
A: The feeling of competing and winning.
Q: What made you choose Utah?
A: Professional environment, people, Salt Lake City is very beautiful and things were right during my official visit. I had a feeling it is a perfect place and I wasn't wrong. Also, I am happy that my mom was here with me during my visit because she knows where I am at.
Q: What are some of your favorite things to do outside of basketball?
A: I really enjoy reading and writing. I love adventures and travels. I love to do things which keeps my adrenaline up.
Q: What is the best piece of advice you've been given?
A: Be patient. Do everything the best as you can and the rest leave to God.
Q: Who is your biggest influence in life on and off the court and why?
A: My family, especially my parents, they're my biggest support. I can't thank them enough for everything they have done for me in my life. They taught me what discipline and professionalism is and they gave me values and told me about God. I am very lucky. Also my two sisters because they're my strength and I always want to get better when I look at them and their hard work.
Q: What do you think are some keys to success when it comes to being a college athlete?
A: Being coachable, time management and awareness of why you are here because it gives you a motivation.
Q: If you could play and go pro in any other sport, what would it be and why?
A: I really like track and field, but if I would go pro in any other sport I would pick tennis. It is social and fun.
Q: What are you looking forward to most this season?
A: I am looking forward to helping my teammates get better as much as I can and give my best effort on practices. I can't play this year because of the redshirt, but I can't wait to see how this team is growing and winning.
Q: What is your favorite part about being on the basketball team at Utah so far?
A: I am happy to be a part of this amazing group of people. I think my teammates are the best part of it at the moment. It's fun not only on the court but also off the court as well. Great positive energy and professional environment.
Q: Where is your favorite place to eat in Salt Lake City?
A: I don't have one yet.
Q: If you could have a super power, what would it be?
A: I wish I had the power to heal.
Q: Do you have any hidden talents?
A: Feeling for others. I heard it's a thinking talent.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: Dirty Dancing.
Q: What is a holiday that doesn't exist that you would like to create?
A: Napping day.
Q: What did you want to be growing up?
A: I wanted to be a vet.
Q: If you could take three things with you to a desert island, what would they be?
A: Pocket knife, tent and a first aid kit.
Q: If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
A: Hard-working, ambitious and original.
Q: What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
A: Vanilla.
Q: If you could time travel, where and when would you go?
A: I would go for a Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
