SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's basketball team's surge in the fourth quarter fell short as the Utes fell 79-72 to Iowa State Saturday evening.
Utah now has a 16-8 overall record and sits at 7-5 in Big 12 play. The Utes were led by Reese Ross' double-double with a career-high 22 points and 12 rebounds. Lani White also scored in double figures with 19 points.
GAME SUMMARY Both teams had a slow start to the game, finding themselves on scoring droughts early in the quarter. Utah sparked momentum with Lani White and Grace Foster hitting back-to-back three pointers with two minutes left in the initial quarter of play. The quarter ended with Iowa State leading 17-14.
Iowa State edged past Utah, pulling out for an 11 point lead before going on a three-minute scoring drought to end the half. Reese Ross and Chyra Evans both hit three pointers to close the gap going into halftime. However, Iowa State stayed ahead for a 33-27 lead at the break.
Iowa State started off the second half strong with an 8-0 run and the Utes couldn't answer as the Cyclones pulled out for a 16 point lead going into the final quarter of play.
Utah had a big fourth quarter outscoring Iowa State 27-16 including five made three pointers, three of which came from White. The Utes were able to cut the score deficit down to single digits with three minutes to go in the game but couldn't close it out as the Cyclones defeated the Utes 79-72.
LEADERS Utah had two Utes score in double figures and were led by Reese Ross' double-double with career-high 22 points and 12 rebounds. Lani White added 19 points, including four mae from beyond the arc.
Evelina Otto was a big contributor for the Utes pulling down 10 rebounds. Chyra Evans led the Utes with four assists and Maty Wilke added three steals to Utah's defensive efforts.
COMPARISON Utah shot 38% from the field while Iowa State shot 46%. Utah went 31% from three knocking down 10-of-32 while Iowa State shot 42% going 10-of-24. At the free-throw line, Utah shot 61% going 14-of-23 while Iowa State shot 72% converting 13-of-18.
Utah had 16 assists on 24 made field goals while Iowa State had 18 assists on 28 made field goals. The Utes outrebounded the Cyclones 43-37 with Utah pulling down 11 offensive boards to Iowa State's four.
UP NEXT Utah will head to Tempe, Ariz. to take on Arizona State Feb. 11 before returning home to host Cincinnati in the Elaine Elliott Legacy game on Feb. 14. Utah will then hit the road again to face Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla.
