Mathias Gavelin, a true freshman for the Utah men's tennis team, comes to the Utes from Stockholm, Sweden. He was a U21 National Champion and ranked as high as No. 3 in the Swedish Junior Rankings.
Q: Why did you choose to play tennis at Utah?
A: Because of my experience during my visit, the team and the Pac-12. But the most important reason was because of coaches.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a part of the Utah tennis program so far?
A: Everyone on the team.

Q: When did you start playing tennis and what drew you to the sport?
A: At the age of five because my dad played tennis.

Q: Who have been your biggest influences in life on and off the court and why?
A: My family because they always support me on and off the court.

Q: What do you think is important in the balance between school and athletics?
A: Always do your best and have a plan when you are going to do different things so you don't feel stressed.

Q: What have been some of the hardships in your career and how did you get past them?
A: Struggling a bit with confidence.

Q: What are you looking forward to most this season?
A: To compete together with the team and to represent the Utes.

Q: If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: Hamburger.

A: Tom Cruise.

A: Be able to fly.

A: A day where all food is free.
