SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis team played their first home matches of the season earlier today at the Eccles Tennis Center. The Utes were able to pull off a 6-1 victory over Weber State, followed by a 7-0 sweep against Montana State University, improving the Utes to a record of 2-1.
"I am happy we got two wins in," head coach
Roeland Brateanu said. "We got to play two matches all the way through and get in good time on the court, which we haven't done since last April. I didn't think we played super well, but we did what we needed to do to win and we are looking forward to going to North Carolina next week."Â

The Utes started off the day strong by earning the doubles point against Weber State. The first victory of the day came from the duo of
Slava Shainyan and
Joe Woolley, as they defeated Nick Werner and Bo-Han Li with a score of 6-3 on court No. 3. To seal the point,
Azat Hankuliyev and
Dan Little then pitched in a win of their own at the No. 2 spot, topping Weber State's Paul Ohde and Cezary Walkusz, 6-1.

In singles, Woolley was able to notch the first win at the No. 6 position, knocking off Bo-Han Li with a score of 6-1, 6-0. Then on the No. 4 court,
Russell Benkaim put the Utes up 3-0 with his victory against Paul Ohde, with a final score of 6-0, 6-1. Then to cement the victory for the Utah men's tennis team, Shainyan defeated Michiel Van Schoor at the No. 2 spot with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Dan Little and
Mathias Gavelin then followed with wins of their own on the No. 1 and No. 5 courts, to give the Utes a 6-0 victory against Weber State.

Later in the day, against Montana State, the Utes were also able to start of the match strong by earning the doubles point.
David Micevski and
Slava Shainyan were paired on the No. 3 court, defeating Mateus Ceolin and Marcos Zelver 6-3.
Randy Cory and
Russell Benkaim then provided the strong finish from the No. 1 position, outlasting Drew Brown and Alexander Flink, 6-4, to give the Utes the advantage heading into singles.

Against Montana State in singles, Micevski provided a quick victory on the No. 1 court, besting Drew Brown with a final score of 6-1, 6-1. Benkaim followed with a victory of his own at the No. 3 spot, with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Alexander Flink. Then to secure the victory for the Utah men's tennis team, Woolley provided a win from the No. 5 position, defeating Creel Smith, 7-5, 6-3. Shainyan, Hankuliyev and Gavelin then followed with wins of their own, to give the Utes a 7-0 sweep over Montana State.

The University of Utah men's tennis team will be back in action on January 25
thand 26
th, as they will head to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. On the 25
th, the Utes will face off against the University of North Carolina, followed by a match against Middle Tennessee State or Duke on the 26
th. The match against North Carolina is set to start at 11 a.m. MT, with the match on the 26
thyet to be determined.
