Coming off of a very successful 2017-18 season, the University of Utah men's tennis team was able to post an overall record of 19-10, reaching as high as No. 24 in the national ranks. The Utes were also able to make it to their first NCAA Tournament since 1997, striving to go for their second consecutive year as they get ready for spring play.
The University of Utah men's tennis team is led by head coach,
Roeland Brateanu, who is now in his fifth season with the Utes. Brateanu was honored as the 2017 and 2018 ITA Mountain Region Coach of the Year, guiding Utah to its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 21 years and to their first appearance in the Top 25 in over three decades. The Utes' 53-30 record since 2016 is the best three-season mark for the program since the early 1980s. The U. has won 10 ITA Regional Awards and placed five student-athletes on the Pac-12 All-Conference teams under Brateanu. Academically, the team posted a record-setting 3.54 GPA in 2016-17. Utah placed a program-best seven student-athletes on the Pac-12 All-Academic teams in 2017-18.
The top anticipated player for the Utah men's tennis team this season is senior,
Dan Little. Little held the No. 1 position in singles last year, posting 17 wins in duel action, with 16 straight wins from Jan. 19 to March 24. In his duel action victories, he was able to defeat many players from nationally ranked teams, including, No. 50 Utah State, No. 38 Arizona and No. 33 Harvard. Little was also paired up with
Azat Hankuliyev at the No. 3 position in doubles, notching 13 doubles wins, including a 10 match win streak. When the season was over with, Little earned a Pac-12 All-Conference honorable mention, while also being named second-team Pac-12 All-Academic.
David Micevski spent last season at the No. 2 spot in singles for the Utes, earning 15 duel wins in singles, with a five-match winning streak to start of the 2017-18 season. Notable singles victories included wins over No. 63 Nicolas Moreno de Alboran of No. 54 UC Santa Barbara, and a win over No. 80 Benjamin Hannestad of No. 38 Arizona State. Micevski also won back-to-back doubles matches with
Egbert Weverink and
Azat Hankuliyev against Idaho State and Utah State, and a doubles win with
Santiago Sierra against Tanner Smith and Mateusz Smolicki of No. 11 USC. Micevski was also named the ITA Mountain Region Player to Watch, as well as being named an ITA Scholar-Athlete and earning second-team Pac-12 All-Academic.
Joe Woolley was able to earn second-team Pac-12 All-Academic and was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete after the 2017-18 season. He was able to notch 11 singles in dual matches, opening the season with wins over Montana State, Idaho State and Pacific. Being primarily paired with
Egbert Weverink in doubles at the No. 1 and No 2 positions, they posted 12 wins together in doubles, with five straight wins against Boise State, UC Irvine, Montana, No 75 New Mexico and No. 54 UC Santa Barbara.
Now entering his junior year with the University of Utah,
Slava Shainyan was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete as well as earning first-team Pac-12 All-Academic honors. Shainyan was able to record seven doubles wins in dual matches during the 2017-18 season. He was also able to earn key victories in singles over Rok Sitar of Montana State at the No. 2 position, with back-to-back wins over the No. 3 at Idaho State and No. 4 at No. 71 Wichita State.
Last season,
Azat Hankuliyev was able to earn a Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention. He saw singles action against Idaho State and Northern Colorado, defeating Austin Gwilliam of Idaho State and Tommy Smalley of Northern Colorado. Hankuliyev saw much success in doubles with his partner
Dan Little at the No. 3 position, earning a total of 13 wins with a 10-match winning streak. Their winning streak included wins over New Mexico, Santa Barbara, Old Dominion, Virginia Commonwealth and Arizona.
Sophomore
Chase Stoner was able to come away with six singles wins in tournament play during last fall, with back-to-back wins over opponents from nationally ranked Wisconsin and Notre Dame. Last fall, at the Gopher Invitational, Stoner played doubles with
Santiago Sierra, coming away with wins over Oregon and Wisconsin.
Coming off a successful freshman season,
Randy Cory was able to card a total of eight dual wins in singles between the No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Cory opened the 2017-18 season with back-to-back wins against Adrian Torrico of Montana State and Cezary Walkusz of Weber State, then notching three straight wins against UC Irvine, Montana and No. 75 New Mexico. In doubles, Cory was paired with Russel Benkaim at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, where they collected a total of 13 wins. Starting the season off on a 10-match win streak, the duo of Cory and Benkaim were able to defeat teams from No. 50 Utah State, No. 71 Wichita State and No. 33 Harvard.
Russell Benkaim played primarily at the No. 6 singles position during the 2017-18 season, earning key victories over Keegan Sullivan of Idaho State at the No. 4 position and Grant Wood of Montana State. Benkaim was paired with
Randy Cory at the No. 1 and No. 2 position in doubles, where they earned 13 while starting the season off with a 10-match win streak. Benkaim and Cory were able to earn key doubles wins over the No. 30 team of Tom Fawcett and Axel Geller of Stanford, while also defeating Mitch Stewart and Jack Davis of No. 51 Washington and Igor Karpovets and Aaro Pollanen of No. 58 Arizona.
Along with the returning players that the Utes will have for the 2018-19 season, three new freshman have joined the University of Utah men's tennis team roster.
One of the new faces includes
Mathias Gavelin, hailing from Stockholm, Sweden. Gavelin was a U21 National Champion, being ranked as high as No. 3 in the Swedish junior ranking. Following Gavelin, comes
Paul McCallie, coming to the University of Utah from Atlanta, Georgia. McCallie is a four star-recruit, and was ranked as high as No. 27 in the USTA National Rankings. He is one of 31 players to be named to the USTA Junior Leadership Team, while also earning the Team Spirit Award at the Spring Team Championships.
Last but not least, is
RJ Parker, who comes from Bountiful, Utah, being ranked as the No. 1 player in the state of Utah. Parker is a four-star recruit that trained at the Advantage Tennis Academy in Irvine, California. He was the runner up at the Intermountain Regional Masters and won the Intermountain Fall Championships, while also competing at the Zonal Team Championships and represented the Intermountain section at the 2015 National Team Championships.
The Utes get started when they travel South to take on BYU on Saturday, Jan. 12. The event is set to start at 5:30 p.m. MT in Provo.
