LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Utah men's tennis team completed the final day of action at the LMU Invitational on Sunday, which also concludes the fall season for the Utes. The Utes matched up against Utah State in singles, followed by a match against UC Irvine in doubles to finish out the three-day tournament.
"This group of young men learned some valuable lessons this week and it shows we still have work to do," said head coach Roeland Brateanu.
In singles against Utah State, all five matches went to third sets. Slava Shainyan topped Sergiu Bucur in a competitive three-set match. Shainyan dropped the first set 3-6, and then was able to rally back 6-1, 6-4, to take the win. Randy Cory then followed with a win of his own, as he beat out Javier Ruiz 7-6 in the close first set, but then dropped the second set 4-6. Cory then escaped with the win in the third set, 6-3.
The final singles win of the day came from Paul McCallie, as he downed Christian Holmes in three sets. McCallie came away with a 7-5, 2-6, 7-5 victory to close out his singles play in the event.
Mathias Gavelin matched up against Felipe Acosta and fell 2-6 in the first set, before picking up a 6-3 win in the second. Ultimately, Gavelin would drop the third set 5-7. On court five, Azat Hankuliyev also fell in a competitive three-set match 2-6, 6-4, 4-6. The final singles match of the day for the Utes was played by Rian Ta, as he dropped his match to Emin Torlic from LMU, with a score of 3-6, 6-3, 1-6.
In doubles against UC Irvine, all three Utah duos dropped their final matches of the event. Hankuliyev and Shainyan fell short 5-8, Gavelin and McCallie fell 6-8, while Rafael Grovas and Cory then fell 4-8 to finish out the LMU Invitational for the Utes.
The Utes will now have a couple months of training before the 2020 season opener in January. Utah will kick off the spring season with a match at home against the University of Idaho on Thursday, Jan. 16, followed by a match later that evening against Weber State. The match against the Vandals will be held at noon, while the match against the Wildcats will be at 5 p.m. Both matches will be held at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City.
