SALT LAKE CITY – University of Utah men's golf head coach
Garrett Clegg announced the addition of Martín León to the 2020-21 roster today, bringing the signing class to three new Utes.
León joins Braxton Watts (Farmington, Utah) and Brandon Robison (Centerville, Utah) to complete this year's class. León will be the sole signee to join the team next fall, while Watts and Robison will serve two-year missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints prior to joining the Utes.
León comes to the Utes from Santiago, Chile where he was one of just two players from Chile to ever win a South American Junior Championship. He brings a tremendous amount of experience from his junior career, where he excelled on the international level.
"We are thrilled to have Martín joining the 2020 class," said Clegg. "We watched him play for the first time this summer in San Diego and we were impressed with his overall golf game and presence on the golf course. He is extremely well traveled. He has competed all over South America, as well as multiple events in the U.S. He will come into the program ready to make an impact."
León claimed the gold medal at the 2017 South American Youth Games after shooting a final round 65, thanks to eight birdies and just one bogey, that secured an event-best 205 strokes. The next year at the 2018 South America Junior Championships, León helped lead his team to a third-place finish, while he would finish as the runner-up in the individual standings at the event in Columbia.
The Chilean standout picked up two tournament titles at events that were played in his home country. In 2019, León was the Araucarias Open champion, and in 2018, he claimed the individual title at the Sport Frances Open. Recently, León finished tied for third place at the Chile Junior Open where he finished just two strokes behind the event champion.
León also competed at the Junior Orange Bowl in Coral Gables, Florida this past year where the top U.S. and foreign players 18 years and younger gather to compete in one of the world's most prestigious junior golf tournaments. Tournaments León competed at in the U.S. were highlighted by performances at the 2018 AJGA Sergio and Angela Garcia Junior Championship and 2017 Optimist International Junior Championships. León finished in sixth place at the 2018 event in Austin, Texas, while he finished fourth at the 2017 event in Palm Beach, Fla.
The son of Juan Pablo and Caroline attends Lycée Antoine de Saint Exupéry and is coached by Victor Fookes. He has received two academic honors during his time in high school for his successes in the classroom – the Diplôme National du Brevet (freshman year) and Baccalauréat de Français (junior year).
