SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's golf team is already at the halfway point of the 2019-20 season after competing in five tournaments this fall.
The group opened the year at the Gopher Invitational in Independence, Minn., finishing in ninth place after shooting 19-over par (871). Junior
Tristan Mandur and true freshman
Jesper von Reedtz led the team finishing in a tie for 11
th (+1, 214) and 21
st (+4, 217) respectively.
Shortly after, the team traveled to Scottsdale, Ariz. for the Maui Jim Intercollegiate where they shot a combined 15-under par (825) to finish in a tie for fifth. The Utes had three players shoot even par or better for the tournament.
"The Maui Jim was by far our best showing," head coach
Garrett Clegg said. "We didn't make big mistakes and we hit the ball great. It is a desert golf course there, so we kept the ball in play, and we played within ourselves."
Jordan Costello wrapped up the tournament in a tie for 12
th after shooting 7-under par (203) while
Mitchell Schow wasn't far behind, tying for 18
th (-5, 205). Mandur rounded out Utah's top three performers at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate, tying for 37
th overall, shooting even (210).
At their next tournament, the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. the team would once again place fifth, shooting 10-pover par (874). Mandur (t-9
th, -2, 214) and Costello (t-19
th, +2, 218) both finished in the top 20 to help the Utes to their second top-five finish in a row.
The team had a few weeks off before heading to Corvallis, Ore. for the Oregon State Invitational. At this event, the Utes would tie for third after carding 13-over par (865). Schow and junior
Blake Tomlinson both shot even par or below to help the team crack the top three.
In their last tournament of the fall, the Utes competed in the Saint Mary's Invitational in Monterey, Calif., finishing in 12
th place after shooting 16-over (868). Although it wasn't the way the team wanted to finish the fall schedule, Schow stood out during the tournament, tying for sixth overall after shooting 4-under par (209).
Schow was consistent throughout the season, finishing in the top-45 of each tournament, including in the top-20 in three. In his 15 rounds of golf this fall, Schow shot under 70 in four rounds, including a low of 67 twice at the Maui Jim.
"He has put in a ton of hard work over the years," Clegg said. "He has gotten a lot better with his putting and he has a great attitude out there on the golf course. He is the leader of this team and our team captain. He has earned that role and he's been awesome for this group all season."
Utah's two juniors, Mandur and Tomlinson, have also shined this fall. Tomlinson played in four of the five tournaments, shooting 1-over par for the season. He shot a low round of 68 at the Maui Jim and recorded three top-40 finishes, including a ninth place finish at the Oregon State Invitational.
Mandur played in all five tournaments for the Utes this season, also shooting 1-over par for the year. He finished in the top-40 in four of the five events this season, shooting a low round of 68 at the Gopher Invitational.
"Tristan has been really good," Clegg said. "He has been our most consistent guy over the course of the season. Blake started out the year playing poorly, missing the first trip, but has made every trip after that and has played great most of the season." Â
With great play from the veterans on the team, it was a positive for the Utes to also have solid contributions from newcomers
Jesper von Reedtz and
Javier Barcos. Barcos played in three tournaments while von Reedtz saw action in four.
"Jesper and Javier are both fantastic golfers and very experienced for freshmen," Clegg said. "They came in and were awesome right away."
With this year's squad, having multiple athletes who can step up and compete in tournaments is a valuable asset to a team. That asset is what makes players like redshirt sophomore
Colton Tanner and redshirt freshman
Oscar Maxfield important to the Utes' operation.
"Colton and Oscar have played better this fall and even though they are not in the lineup, they are pushing everybody on the team to be better," Clegg said. "It is really good because either they will get their opportunity to play or it has made those in front of them have to play better to beat them. They are doing everything they need to do to have an opportunity to compete."
With the fall schedule in the books, the Utes look toward the spring where they will open at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Lihue, Hawaii Feb. 20-22. With positives to build off of from the fall, the Utes will look to utilize this time off to better themselves as individuals and as a team.
"What we are really focusing on is course management and learning how to make proper decisions – just getting that ingrained in their minds so that when they compete again, they won't make the same mistakes," Clegg said. "We have elite players that can play great golf and we look forward to getting back on the course."
