Men's Tennis Wraps Up Day Two of LMU Invitational

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of Utah men's tennis team has completed day two of competition at the LMU Invitational. Saturday's action consisted of the Utes matching up against tournament host LMU in singles to start off the day, followed by a face-off in doubles against Utah State and UC Irvine at the LMU Tennis Center.

Paul McCallie picked up a singles victory against Loyola Marymount for the Utes, posting a win against Austin Di Giulio in a three-set match. Di Giulio won the first set 6-1, but McCallie came back in the final two sets 6-1, 7-5, to defeat Di Giulio and take the match.Â

Azat Hankuliyev also picked up a singles win for the Utes, also defeating his opponent in three sets. Hankuliyev won the first set 6-4 against Ethan Frost, but then dropped the second 3-6. Hankuliyev then finished things off 6-3 in the third set to tab the singles win on Saturday.

Slava Shainyan faced off against LMU's Diego Nava and dropped the first set 1-6 from his opponent. Shainyan then grabbed the second set 7-6 to even things out, but eventually dropped the third 4-6 to lose the match.Â

Mathias Gavelin the dropped his match against Lucas Moreno in straight set, falling 2-6, 1-6. Randy Cory fell to Max Kaiser in a close and competitive match, with a score 5-7, 6-7. The last match of the day for singles came from freshman Rafael Grovas. Grovas fell 4-6, 2-6 to Thien Nyugen.

Looking to wrap up the day in doubles, the Utes saw matches against Utah State and UC Irvine. The duo of Hankuliyev and Shainyan started off string with a win against Bucur and Ruiz, coming out on top with a score of 8-3. Grovas and Cory then followed with a win of their own, beating out the duo of Barthe and Mkrtchian from UC Irvine, with a score of 8-6.

Gavelin and McCallie dropped their doubles match of the day against Utah State's Acosta and Holmes, with a final score of 1-8.

The Utah Men's tennis team will continue action tomorrow with the final day of the LMU Invitational. The Utes are scheduled to match up against Utah State in singles, followed by a match up against UC Irvine in doubles.
