SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah men's tennis program is set to begin an eight-match home stand, starting with New Mexico and Idaho State on Sunday, Feb. 17.
The match against the Lobos will start at 10 a.m. followed by an afternoon matinee against Idaho State at 3 p.m. Both matches will be free to the public at the Eccles Tennis Center on the University of Utah campus with a live stream also available on
UtahUtes.com.
The Utes have played both New Mexico and Idaho State each season since head coach
Roeland Brateanu took over the program, holding a 4-2 record against the Lobos and a 4-0 record against the Tigers in that time span.
Utah is 6-3 overall this season and had won four straight before its 5-2 loss at Iowa. The weekend was a split with a huge 4-2 win over Miami last Saturday after suffering the loss against the Hawkeyes on Sunday.
The Utes rallied back for its win against the Hurricane after losing the doubles point and its first singles match on court five, starting with a momentum changing win in No. 1 singles.
Dan Little came away with a key 7-5, 6-4 win over No. 13 ranked Adria Soriano, setting things in motion for the Utes to then win on courts six, two and three respectively.
Little's ranked win wasn't the only one of the day with
Slava Shainyan picking up a 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 win over No. 58 Bojan Jankulovski on court three to seal the 4-2 win for the Utes.
Little went on to claim his second top-90 win of the weekend when he took on No. 89 Kareem Allaf of Iowa, winning 6-1, 6-3 to earn Pac-12 Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors.
Mathias Gavelin came away with Utah's other point against the Hawkeyes, beating Piotr Smietana to improve to 7-0 this season.
Next up for the Utes after their tango with New Mexico and Idaho State will be another pair of home matches on Feb. 23 against Marquette and Montana. For tennis updates during home meets, follow the Utes on Twitter (@UtahTennis) and Instagram (@UtahTennis).
