Spring Football: One More Before Spring Break

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utes wrapped up the third practice of spring on Thursday afternoon at the Eccles Practice Fields, their final practice before taking a week off for spring break.

Kyle Lanterman took a minute to chat about the reaction surrounding last week's video of him receiving a scholarship.

"I had no idea what was going on. That was the last thing I was expecting. The first thing that went through my head was 'I'm going to get embarrassed because I messed up.' I think the only reason something like that would happen would be a family emergency, so that was the second thing going through my mind. They got me for sure. That was good."

"It was crazy. I had random people come up to me who said they recognized me and said it brought tears to their eyes, and that was moving for me. I'm just a guy who loves football, and that's all I know how to do is work hard and be a good teammate. It's been extremely moving. I'm not on social media so but people told me it had been posted by Sports Illustrated and that was really cool. People have been telling me they have watched it 10 times, which is very humbling."

Sophomore quarterback Cameron Rising on his teammates and the first week…
"So far so good. Everything's been going smooth. I love competing with them. Getting used to it. Getting used to running plays with the ball with the rest of the guys and having a defense. I never would have expected this but I'm happy to be here and I just love it so far."

Head Coach Kyle Whittingham on the quarterbacks…
"There is so little of the offense installed right now that it's tough to get a bead on how those guys are progressing. When we get back from spring break about a week or two into that we'll get a better idea who's sorting things out and absorbing things."

Whittingham on the preseason hype…
"I ignore it. We have a lot of work to do. We were very average today. I wish we had 40 more spring balls instead of 12. We tune it out. That's something I think this team had done a good job through the years of not paying attention to the outside noise and just trying to take care of our business."

Senior linebacker Manny Bowen on coming to Utah...
"Everything's been great. It was a great transition. Luckily I have a great group of guys, a great group of coaches, it's a great University to fall in. Got a lot of support from everybody and I'm just glad to be here. I'm spending a lot of time in the film room, me and Coach Swan, Coach Scalley and I. Right now I'm focusing on the mac position but I'm pretty sure when fall camp comes they would like me to know mac and rover so I'll be able to play both linebacker positions on the field. Everything's coming along great. We're installing the meat and potatoes of our playbook right now so everybody can get adjusted to that. I just think everything is going along well."

Bowen on why Utah appealed to him…
"Defense. If you watch the film from last year, you see the way they get after the ball. This defense has a swarm mentality. I saw myself fitting in perfect here. They have a great group of linebackers leaving so I look forward to filling those shoes this year."

Offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig on the quarterbacks…
"We have a rotation order. Tyler's [Huntley] getting the most reps with the ones. Jason's [Shelley] getting reps with the ones and you saw Drew Lisk getting a couple reps with that gang so not really worried about naming a starter right now, just working through spring ball, trying to learn the system. They're doing a nice job with it. There's some new terminology, the snap count's changed a little bit. It's been a good three days, we're starting slow, things are going to pick up here when we get back from spring break."

Samson Nacua on the first practices…
"It's different. The offense is very different. I feel like the intensity that everyone's come out with is very different. I feel like anyone who's come to watch our practices and the team, you come out and you see everything feels and looks different and it feels good, the energy is good. I like the new coaches. Coach Ludwig is an offensive guy for sure. An amazing guy in the film room, an amazing guy on the field."
