Men's Tennis Advances to Next Round of Pac-12 Championships

OJAI, Calif. – The 8thseeded University of Utah men's tennis team was able to move past No. 9 seed Oregon in the first round of the Pac-12 Championships earlier today. The Utes were able to defeat the Ducks with a score of 4-1, and will face off against the No. 1 seeded UCLA Bruins in the next round of action tomorrow.
The last time the Utah men's tennis team advanced in the Pac-12 tournament, was back in the 2016-17 season, when the defeated the University of Washington in the first round of action.
"What a gutsy win from our guys today," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "We started off very slow in doubles, but competed unbelievably well in singles. Super proud of the guys."
The Utes were down early, as they were unable to win the doubles point against Oregon. The duo of Joe Woolley and Russell Benkaim were the only doubles team to record a victory for Utah, as they downed Armando Soemarno and Emmanuel Coste on the No. 3 court with a score of 6-4.
In singles, Benkaim was able to get things rolling for the Utes with a win at the No. 4 spot, as he topped Joshua Charlton 6-4, 6-2, to even the score up at 1-1. Freshman Mathias Gavelin then followed with a win of his own at the No. 5 position, defeating Charles Roberts 6-2, 6-3, to give the Utes the 2-1 advantage. On the No. 6 court, Woolley was then able to knock off Armando Soemarno with a score of 6-3, 7-5, to put Utah in winning position. To then seal the victory for the Utes over Oregon, No. 79 ranked David Micevski provided the final win needed, as he defeated Ty Gentry 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, to obtain the 4-1 victory and move onto the next round of the Pac-12 Championships.
The University of Utah men's tennis team will be back in action tomorrow, as they will be facing off against No. 1 seed UCLA in the next round. This match with the Bruins is set to start at 1 p.m. MT, with live scoring of the match by the provided here.
