WACO, Texas – The University of Utah men's tennis team battled a top-10 ranked opponent and adverse weather today in the first round of the NCAA Championships, but unfortunately fell to the No. 6 Baylor Bears, 4-0.Â
It was a tough match from start to finish as the Utes went toe-to-toe with the Bears in doubles and singles, but after a rain and lightning delay, the Utes struggled to regain an edge.Â
"I think we saw a match today with two faces," head coach
Roeland Brateanu said. "We were incredibly competitive in the first sets and sold ourselves short. Then after the rain delay, it took us a little to find out footing and Baylor showed why they are one of the hottest teams in college tennis."
"After that, we continued to fight but couldn't quite recover. It is a hard to see the season come to an end like this, nevertheless, I am incredibly proud of this group of guys. We competed like the best today, with great class and I think Ute Nation can be proud of these student-athletes."Â
Starting in doubles play on court three,
Russell Benkaim and
Joe Woolley were defeated 6-1 with
Dan Little and
Azat Hankuliyev battling for a win on court two with a 5-4 lead.
David Micevski and
Slava Shainyan were handed the task of taking on the No. 1 doubles team in the country in Jimmy Bendeck and Sven Lah, but fell short in the set 6-4 with Baylor claiming the doubles point.Â
Â
Five of Baylor's singles players were ranked in the latest ITA polls with Little, Micevski and Shainyan losing their first sets in singles play in a tiebreaker. Micevski took the second set on court two against No. 25 Matias Soto 6-0, but the match went unfinished.Â
Baylor clinched its second point of the match on court five after
Mathias Gavelin couldn't close the gap on No. 76 Sven Lah, losing 6-2, 6-3. Little lost his first set 7-6 (7-2) against No. 20 Johannes Schretter, but was unable to close out the second set, falling 6-2 to give Baylor a 3-0 lead.Â
Court three finished the match with Shainyan falling 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 with Baylor winning the match 4-0.Â
The Utah men's tennis season comes to an end as the Utes finish 17-12 overall, the fourth straight year with 17-or-more wins. The Utes ranked as high as No. 41 in the ITA rankings, finishing the season with wins over multiple ranked opponents.Â
The Utes were led this year by seniors Little, Micevski and Woolley. Micevski ranked No. 85 nationally in singles in the latest poll with Little coming in at No. 45 as he starts to prepare for the NCAA Singles Championship taking place later on in May.Â
