Camp Report Day 1: Back to the Gridiron

SALT LAKE CITY – Despite a persistent drizzle at the Eccles Football Center today, the Utah football program got in a solid first practice while officially kicking off the 2019 season.Â
The voice of the Utes, Bill Riley, caught up with head coach Kyle Whittingham after practice today for the first episode of this year's Football Camp Report.
The Utes enter the 2019 season as the favorites to win the South Division title, in a vote by Pac-12 media, and placed 11 players on the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference team. Whittingham enters his 15th fall camp this week, returning 17 starters to the gridiron that are primed to lead the Utes throughout the season.Â

News in the Huddle:Â With a new season comes new positions and number changes. Returners Bronson Boyd (#8), Devin Brumfield (#6) and Nygel King (#16) will all wear new uniform numbers this season. Jayden Clemons, a quarterback from Lehi, Utah will make the switch to defensive back and Falcon Kaumatule from Las Vegas, Nev. will make the switch from defensive end to offensive line.Â
Despite the rain, the Utes were in good spirits today putting on their best smiles while taking in a full practice of drills. The offense wore red jerseys today with the defense sporting black.Â

UtahUtes.com got to catch up with wide receiver Derrick Vickers after practice to talk about his senior year back, what he wants to improve on and what he is looking forward to most this season.Â
On how it felt to find out that the NCAA had granted him another year of eligibility…Â
"I was really excited. I get to play out here, play the sport that I love and I am getting to play with my brothers."
On what kind of goals he has made for himself…
"I just want to improve on what I can do. They didn't really get a chance to see it last year, so I am ready to work and show everyone what I am capable of doing."
On what game he is looking forward to most…
"I am taking it game-by-game. August 29th is coming. That is where it's at."

The Utes also addressed the media after practice with Whittingham, Tyler Huntley and Zack Moss all getting to talk about their first day back.Â
Head coach Kyle Whittingham on if offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig's playbook has evolved since his first stint at this position…
"There are more similarities than differences. There are little tweaks here and there to the route structures and maybe some additions to the run game, but the basis and the philosophy isn't much different. The players are excited about what he has brought to the table and we got off to a good start today."Â
On if Zack Moss will play some receiver in Ludwig's offense…
"Yeah, he will catch some balls and not only screen passes, but he will run some routes."
On the depth at running back…
"We are deeper at running back than we have been in a lot of years and those two young kids did very well today. Both Micah Bernard and Jordan Wilmore had good days. As far as a clear cut second behind Zack, it is a battle. Devonta'e Henry-Cole is in that battle as well as Devin Brumfield and the two young guys, so it is going to be a good competition for that spot."Â
Senior running back Zack Moss on what he has learned coming into his third year as the starting running back…
"Each and every camp is different and I try to take everything I have learned from the first two and try to implement it into this one."
On the hype surrounding the program right now and how the team is handling it…
"The good thing is that we are still underdogs and we will always look at ourselves like that. It is great to get that recognition, but this team at the heart and at the core still has that underdog mentality. It is good for us because we are going to bring that work each and every day."
Senior quarterback Tyler Huntley on how his first day of camp went…
"It went pretty good. A lot of the offseason work came into play today and we feel we got a head start on some of the plays. The first day went smooth though."Â
On how he feels he fits into Andy Ludwig's system…
"I feel like I fit pretty well. We are still progressing and there is a lot to learn, but it is making us better as players."Â
