SALT LAKE CITY – After fighting through the rain yesterday, the Utah football program beat the heat during the second practice of fall camp. With 28 days remaining before Utah kicks off at BYU on Aug. 29, the Utes will have two more practices this week before taking Sunday off from drills. Â
Â
Bill Riley caught up with quarterback Tyler Huntley today for the second episode of Football Camp Report to talk about getting stronger, learning a new offense and getting to play another year with Zack Moss.Â
UtahUtes.com also got a chance to chat with sophomore quarterback Jason Shelley after practice for a round of 20 questions.Â
Q: What is the earliest memory you have of football?
A:Â "Scoring my very first touchdown in flag football. I scored, and then I remember spinning the ball and doing a little touchdown dance. I got a 15-yard penalty. I was four years old and I was ready for the primetime."Â
Q: What attracted you to the sport of football?
A: "My dad. He played professional football and that just put me into it."
Q: You grew up in Texas, what have been some of the differences between Utah and Texas?
A: "It is really different. It is flat, no mountains. It is definitely more of a country lifestyle compared to an urban lifestyle."
Q: Texas high school football is known to be elite, did it help you prepare for a career in Division I athletics?
A: "Absolutely. I played in a high school football game that had 35,000 people there. Then coming to Utah, I felt more prepared for that."
Q: What has it been like getting to play with Jaylen Dixon again?
A: "It has been amazing. We have been playing with each other since middle school. It has just been fun to see us both get to live out our dreams. We actually live like walking distance to each other now so it is just nice to get to hang out with my brother."
Q: You were a successful baseball player in high school as well, was there a time that you had to choose between the two?
A: "Actually when I got to college. I thought about playing here. But in high school, they were really good about me playing both. I would go to spring football in the morning and baseball in the afternoon, so it worked out."
Q: What was it about the University of Utah that made you want to come here?
A: "The mentality, the family atmosphere, I love the team. The coaching staff treats us like family too. I also knew that the Pac-12 is a great conference to be in, so I figured this would help me get to the NFL."
Q: Who is your biggest influence on and off the field?
A: "My mom. She is loving, she taught me how to respect people, she taught me how to be a good man and she taught me to respect women. She is one of my best friends."
Q: What are you pursuing your degree in?
A: "Business marketing."
Q: What traits do you think makes a successful quarterback?
A: "Leadership, because you have to be able to lead the guys. Nobody is going to follow a bad leader. Confidence because the guys won't follow someone who isn't confident, being able to keep the team together and then just being smart. You don't have to be the best quarterback, but if you can lead, be confident and be smart then your teammates will follow you and help you."Â
Q: What has been your favorite memory so far at Utah?
A: "Jumping into the Muss, for sure. Beating BYU last year is up at the top. Coming back 28-7 in the fourth quarter, beating our rival and then yeah, I jumped into the Muss. It was crazy."
Q: If you could go pro in another sport, what would it be?
A: "Basketball."
Q: If you had to choose a coach to be on a pick-up football team, who would you choose first?
A: "You know I am going to say Morgan Scalley. He is the best thrower of the football on the coaching staff, so he would play quarterback and then boom, we could work from there."Â
Q: Who is the best dancer on the team?
A: "Me. Well maybe Julian Blackmon, but also me."
Q: Do you have any hidden talents?
A: "I can play the tuba. I was in middle school band."
Q: What is your favorite thing to do outside of football?
A: "Play video games. I love playing NBA 2K, MLB, but I don't like Madden. I play football so much, so on my off time I try to not play anything football."
Q: How would you describe yourself in three words?
A: "Caring, funny and demanding. But not demanding in a bad way, I like getting things done."
Q: If you could have a super power, what would it be?
A: "I would want to fly because flying is cool. Especially if I could fly here, would go over the mountains, get a great view of the city, that would be life."
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: "Tacos or enchiladas."
Q: If you could time travel, where would you go?
A: "You know I think I would go forward, like 2080. I want to see how old I am going to be, like super old. I want to see my grandkids, see my life and then be like man, I lived it."
Q: If you won the lottery, what would you do with the money?
A: "Go to Mars."Â
