Camp Report Day 10: In The Huddle

SALT LAKE CITY – The University of Utah football program wrapped up its 10th practice and first scrimmage of fall camp today in what head coach Kyle Whittingham called a "very productive" day.Â

For today's episode of Football Camp Report with Bill Riley, Nick Ford dropped by to chat preseason camp, getting to play against the Utah defensive line and coming from a Pac-12 family.Â
Whittingham met up with the media after the scrimmage today to give a full recap.Â
On how the scrimmage went today…
"It was one heck of a scrimmage, very productive. We came out pretty healthy. The first team looked sharp and we saw some good things. Jordan Wilmore really showed up today. We had very few penalties. There were a couple of takeaways by the defense which was bad for the offense but good for the defense. It was a productive day but a long day, we had 120 plays in addition to special teams plays so it was a three-hour session."Â
On if anyone stood out today…
"Individually, Julian Blackmon had a nice pick, Jaylon Johnson did some good things, Francis Bernard, and of course the front four who always does good things. The offensive line is starting to look like a cohesive unit, there were very few issues on the offensive line today. Tyler looked sharp. Deep balls were really good today. We connected on a few deep balls today that were right on the money."Â
On trying to find the best five for the offensive line…
"Well obviously we will dissect this film and watch it. From there we will start to determine who those five guys are that we are going to start working together right now. It won't be set in stone because we still have 19 days, but we have to have five starting Monday to get them starting to work together."
On what he's looking for the twos on defense to work on…
"To get them to be assignment sound. There are still too many mistakes. Better technique, higher sense of urgency. I mean our ones are really good, so there is going to be a drop off, but right now the separation between our one's and our twos is just too big and we have to shrink that gap."
On how the running backs looked as a group…
"Very good. Jordan Wilmore was the guy that had the best day. Zack Moss didn't take any hits today. Devin Brumfield made some good runs. Devonta'e Henry-Cole did a nice job, so there are three or four guys that are doing well. Charlie Vincent did some good things when the threes came in at the end. He showed up and showed some toughness and some quickness."
On what receivers were making the deep catches…
"Jaylen Dixon. He is a legit deep threat and as legit of a deep threat as there is in the country. He is blazing fast."
On how the depth at linebacker is looking…
"Limited. With Devin Lloyd, Francis Bernard and Trennan Carlson, Sione Lund is looking better so that gives us four. We need a fifth and a sixth to step up."
On how the kickers are doing…
"The kickers did better today, but there is no separation. They are all about at 70-percent right now. The good news is that Matt Gay at this exact time in camp last fall was 68-percent and he just kept getting better and better. So, we are looking for someone who can separate themselves and really take charge."Â

In The Huddle With Morgan Scalley and Andy Ludwig
Scalley on how the scrimmage went today…
"The ones flew around, did some nice things. Twos, we are not ready yet. We have to bring those backups along in a couple of positions. That is our jobs as coaches though. We did a nice job in the red zone. Situational football was a big part of the scrimmage, but for the most part I am pleased with the ones and got to get the twos going."
What position groups stood out today…
"We will watch the film. I really liked the ones on defensive line, but what's not to look about those guys. We have to have discipline pass rush lanes and that showed up a little bit today. The ones at linebacker looked solid with Devin Lloyd and Francis Bernard along with the safeties and corners. Like I said, the ones kind of have that experience and leadership and they know how it's supposed to be done, the twos just have to come along."Â Â
Ludwig on the young running backs today…
"They looked good. It was a real positive to get them tackled. They've had one live day in camp so far, but to get them consecutive running live work is a positive. The ball security was very good and the physicality of them running behind their pads was good. I am pleased with their production and their toughness."
On if the offensive line is starting to gel…
"They are getting better every day. To gel, you are talking about gelling with the same five guys and Jim Harding is still working with putting a lot of players through on the rotation and creating depth. We have a lot of players getting exposure to different spots. The true gelling will start kicking in when Jim narrows it down to the best five and then they can hone in on that group next week when we get into week three of camp."Â
