Camp Report Day 16: Utes Wrap Up Fall Camp

SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah football program wrapped up its 16th and final practice of fall camp today, capping the day off with the 2019 Utah Red Zone Fan Fest taking place tonight from 6-8 p.m. on the Rice-Eccles Stadium south plaza.Â
The annual event will feature all 20 Utah varsity teams and coaches signing autographs, posing for photos and engaging in interactive games with the fans.
The Utah Red Zone will be set up on the south plaza selling merchandise and the ticket office will be open for single-game football ticket sales. ESPN 700 and Bill Riley will be broadcasting live from the event.
Concession stands will be open with food available for purchase and food trucks will also be parked on the concourse. Mystery boxes will be a feature of this year's Fan Fest again, going on sale at 6 p.m. MT on the south plaza for $50.
Fans may park in the west parking lot for free and should enter through the main west gate of the stadium. Gate D will serve as the main entrance to the event, which will be held rain or shine.
With today being the last day of fall camp, it was also the last episode of Football Camp Report with Bill Riley. Riley caught up with head coach Kyle Whittingham to get a full camp recap.Â
It was a big weekend for the Utes as captains and the leadership council were announced along with three scholarships being awarded. Seniors Tyler Huntley and Darrin Paulo were chosen as the offensive captains while Bradlee Anae and Leki Fotu earned defensive captain spots. Ben Lennon was chosen as the special teams captain.Â
For the leadership council, the Utes chose 14 players: Jaylon Johnson, Tyler Huntley, Zack Moss, Demari Simpkins, Bradlee Anae, Francis Bernard, Britain Covey, Julian Blackmon, Terrell Burgess, Ben Lennon, John Penisini, Darrin Paulo, Cole Fotheringham and Leki Fotu.Â

This week, the three scholarships that were awarded were to Ali'i Niumatalolo, Malik Haynes and Mason Woodward. Niumatalolo, a tight end from Annapolis, Md., has played in 21 career games for the Utes.Â

Haynes is a senior defensive lineman from Hauula, Hawaii, and came to the Utes after playing two seasons at Ventura College.Â

Woodward is a senior from West Point, Utah, and played in 11 games last season, earning Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention.Â

On what goes into the process of selecting the team captains…
"The process is that the team votes for them, very simple. Everyone is eligible to be a captain unless you have a disciplinary issue. So, I thought our guys did a good job. Tyler Huntley and Darrin Paulo are our offensive captains and Bradlee Anae and Leki Fotu on defense. And then of course Ben Lennon on special teams, which is a great show of respect for Ben because this is his first year here."
On if he feels he got what he wanted out of this camp…
"Just about. If we had to kick today, Andrew Strauch is our guy. He is definitely the No. 1 right now, but that doesn't mean that is set in stone. The offensive line, we feel we got that solidified. We've got six guys. Linebackers are looking good too, we've made a lot of progress."
On what he found out about his team that he didn't know yet…
"Not much. We had a good feel for these guys in the spring with their leadership. It's been a lot of fun seeing them grow this camp."
On getting to hand out scholarships…
"Scholarships is one of the best aspects of being a football coach. Getting to see these guys come in and work their tails off for three or four years just like everybody else and then getting to award them is great. We had the opportunity to give out three this year."
