Camp Report Day 4: In The Huddle

SALT LAKE CITY – It was a stormy and windy day at the Eccles Football Center as the Utes wrapped up their fourth practice of fall camp as the acclimatization period starts to come to an end. Utah will have one more acclimatization practice on Monday, Aug. 5 in full gear before moving to full contact drills on Tuesday.Â

With 26 days remaining until the Utes face off against the BYU Cougars on Aug. 29, practices are intensifying and skills are being sharpened. Just like in high school,Tyler Huntley and Demari Simpkins were in sync today at practice, getting the ball to the red zone on this electric play.

Bill Riley got a chance to catch up with newcomer Ben Lennon, who will look to follow in the footsteps of his fellow Aussies who have left a legacy and set the tone for all Utah punters.Â
Today's practice also ended with the first episode of "Real Talk With Reggie" where former Ute and current recruiting assistant played "what's in the box" with freshman LaCarea Pleasant-Johnson.Â

With the first week of fall camp officially in the books, head coach Kyle Whittingham met with the media to recap Utah's four practices.Â
 On how the first week went…
"We had four really good practices, but today was definitely our best. It was a lot cleaner, less illegal procedures and less penalties which is good to see. It was a physical and long practice, so we got some conditioning in. The game is in good shape. Offense is doing a nice job relative to how much they have installed right now. They have a lot on their plate, but they are doing a nice job getting it sorted out. The execution was pretty good today by the offense."
On how many guys he feels comfortable with so far on the offensive line…
"I would say probably about six. That number needs to build to eight or nine. I really like those young guys like Marist Talavou, Sataoa Laumea and Johnny Maea. I think we are really on the mark on recruiting those guys."
On if they are getting closer to finding a starting kicker this week…
"Yeah we didn't kick today because you don't want to wear the kickers' legs out. If you get a stale leg in camp, sometimes you never recover from that, so we kicked the first three days and took today off. I am very impressed with what all three of them have done so far with their accuracy and their range. I couldn't be more pleased at this point. We still have a lot of work to do, but they have obviously worked hard this offseason because they are way ahead of where they were in the spring."Â
On what linebackers Devin Lloyd and Trennan Carlson do differently…Â
"It might be too early for Trennan. We are still trying to get a feel for him. He is definitely a great edge pass rusher. He has a real feel for coming off the edge. So as time goes on he should be better and better. For Devin Lloyd, his skill set is outstanding. He is a guy that we have a lot of faith in."
On if having such a strong defensive line helps get the offensive line ready for the season…
"It is a huge help. Those guys going against each other goes both ways because we have some great offensive linemen. Getting those guys going head to head every day is great training on both sides of the ball."
On if there are any newcomers that have been standing out…
"Jordan Wilmore at running back. I am very impressed with that kid. Aaron Lowe at defensive back. Then those three freshman offensive linemen in Marist Talavou, Sataoa Laumea and Johnny Maea."
On if Aaron Lowe will play safety…
"We might try him at nickel some too. He is a fast kid that has great ball skills. He is very instinctive out there so we might mess around with him at a few spots out there."Â
On if Francis Bernard's demeanor has changed since he was put in more of a leadership role…
"He has done a great job leading. His body has changed. He shed about 15 pounds and he is just ripped. He got himself in great shape and is doing a great job of being a leader out there."Â
